I've been working on making it possible to put MP3s in posts. I'm including a very short one in this post. I need feedback. I'm not sure how this will work for people who are on dialup connections. This file is coded at 128 mbs. It works fine on my cable modem connection. My hope is that it will automatically get buffered for people with slower links. If not, we may have to download stuff encoded as much lower bit rates.

The mp3 and other audio compressed files are configured to use the windows media plugin. According to the documentation, they have plugins for all of the sytems, including Linux and MacIntosh. If you don't have the plugin loaded, the software should get it automatically.

Here are two files for testing.

Please let me know how this is working for you. You can just post a reply to this topic.

Thanks...

Just in case this behavior isn't what you intended, clicking on the link in the e-mail started 1st .mp3, which when ended, 2nd file started automatically (while the status bar in 1st also began again as tho looping). Perhaps starting each cut should be left to the listener?

OK, I took out the streaming feature and just do downloads. Too bad that people will be running obsolete browsers. If anyone finds any problems with the mp3s, please let me know.

Well, Brian, thank you very much.

OSX, better than what I'm using, Windows ME Sad

Would you try to upload a mp3 file? If you would rather use some other format of compressed audio, I'll try and configure the server to accept it. I think the configuration will also accept RealAudio files with a .rm extension.

Thanks again...

Nothing played and nothing downloaded. I was provided with a table having stats about the two files and offered the chance to download these files.

Sundagger? That must mean Brian's here. Cool!

Bill,
Sorry it didn't work for you Sad
What version of what browser are you using? What OS? Did you wait a very long time? I know you're on a dialup. Can you watch your modem lights to see if data is coming down the pipe?

Hmm.. I tested both files. Works fine. Perhaps you should put in a target=blank so the file opens in another browser window.
Works fine on OSX 10.2.5 with IE 5.2, Chimera and Safari.

By the way.. I would love to hear more of both those tracks.

I guess download is the best choice. Or is there a way to do BOTH? And /or possible choose options when uploading? And perhaps there should be some sort of way to attach a copyright notice or whatever to a file? I do not know this forum but I guess it is possible to add that feature in.

both links bring up download dialogs in opera 7.1...pasting the locations into winamp 2.9 start streams, but on my 56k, there are of course gaps as it has to rebuffer (expected).

what sort of server is this site run from? i don't know a whole lot about php but...from what i do know, i would think that it would be pretty simple to have a script execute upon upload completion that could re-encode the mp3 at a lower bitrate for streaming and link to a .m3u refrencing to the file.

alternatively, you could leave it up to the user to tell the server what to do by letting it know what sort of file it was...for example, four checkboxes corresponding to download (link to mp3), stream (link to generated m3u), and then stream quality (low, high) could do the trick...probably easiest solution. autodetection of the bitrate might be worth looking into as well.

with re-encoding uploaded mp3s into dialup suited streams...might not be much of a problem yet, but at some point, that's going to make your server wish you were dead. you could impose a 5 (or whatever) upload per user per month limit, or a certain number per day that was applied site wide, served out on a first come, first serve basis to try and make sure that the server doesnt get too stressed.

just a few ideas i had...:)

Doesn't that mean you could have chosen to download the files and listened after everything came down?

The server is a 450 MHz Linux system with a 1 Mb symetrically DSL. I'm not keep on re-encoding on the fly with such minimal hardware.

Yes, that is the easiest, and best solution I think as well. I don't know how to do autodetection of bitrate.

Thanks, for the thoughts.

yes, i could have done so, and did with the smaller of the two.

i have no idea if this would help you on the autodetection thing or not, but figured i'd give it to you anyway, in case you were interested in it, even if not for the site.

http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialAudioStreaming.html

i wouldn't want to do that reencoding thing either...sure would be cool though!

Howard, I don't know if the question you raised some 15 years ago has caused you any sleepless nights, but just in case dig this: the Mp3 is the song "Everybody To The Limit" sung by Strong Bad, produced by The Cheat on Homestarrunner.com

I just had a Flash flashback.... now I'm gonna go look at Nosepilot.

Ages indeed. I was doing a little research in the event I manage to attend a Chez Mosc and looking at Howards audio uploads I went to the oldest and there it was: the best song Strong Bad ever did. That Howard knew about it blew my mind..

The Flash site is still running but will be down in 2020 when they pull the plug on Flash. IMO Strong Bad would never have pushed Homestar aside so easily if Homestar had, like, arms.
