Buchla 277e mystery! |
 |
|
In the 277e there are 4 large knobs named spatial dynamics, along to each
one of these there are 2 additional knobs, what do these 3 knobs actually
do/affect? Move sound around in quadrature? And the swirl button what
hapends if pressed?

The 227e is a four input channel, quadraphonic output mixer. Each channel has a volume control (the largest knob) and a way to position the sound in quad, controlled by the two smaller knobs. The quadraphonic positioning has two main modes, controlled by the "Swirl" button.
When Swirl is on, each channel has a built-in quadrature LFO, that swirls the sound around the quadraphonic field. The left-most knob with the LEDs around it controls the speed and direction of the pan, and the right most knob controls the distance from the center (radius). If either of these two knobs is in its full clockwise position it enables the input jacks (labeled rate and ampl) to control the LFO's rate/direction and the radius.
When Swirl is off, the two knobs directly control position: the left-most knob with the LEDs around it controls Left-Right, and the right most knob controls Front-Back. If either of these two knobs is in its full clockwise position it enables the input jacks to directly control the X and Y axis.
The sub-mixer section is a fairly standard four in, one out mixer, but it has one slightly obscure feature, which is controlled with the "in the mix" button. When "in the mix" is on, the four sub-mixer input channels act as attenuated inputs to the four output channels. This way you can mix in another quadraphonic source. |

| The middle EQ "band" is called "spectral tilt". If you google "spectral tilt EQ", or something similar, you will probably find a few references. |
