Think of yourself as an electron running an obstacle course, or floating in the "current" Harry describes here. Trying to "get back" to where you came from. Think about the splitting and merging of "rivers", "oceans" and "lakes" full of electron "rafter's", and also notice constrictions where the water dries up and you have to "walk". Also look for "eddies", "dams" and "fish ladders" that may leave you circling without getting where you're going. IMO this is not really as silly as it might seem.

Yes, it is.

Frankly, it surprises me that Ray would still suggest that. (Unless the context of HIS statement is missing here! Very Happy That he might be referring to the safety earth ground only and covers the other signal/CV grounding elsewhere on his site?)

Or maybe it's because Ray needs a good lesson in how to sucessfully design and market a synth from an old pro like Randal.

Nope, No googling. Credit goes to the fact that I've been working on speech synthesis circuits recently, reading a lot of research where vowels are represented as you've done. So it was either A-I-N or A-E-N or I-A-N. The last seemed most reasonable, so I went with it.

You left out I-AM-CLUELESS.

I really like this project. I will Definitely be creating a PCB for this chatterbox project. Thank you for sharing the original article! I plan to add VC to the parameters, and probably allow trigs/gates for the touch switch items too. I REALLY like this one!

I don't know which is more surpising - the fact that he wants to do a PCB of a casually mentioned project (that never happens with Randal) or the fact that such an old pro as Randal had never heard of the Chatterbox to begin with. What are the odds?

Fonik: in the diy forum we recently collected ways to do attenuvertion. any chance you post a schematic of your method?

Quote:
Hi Fonik!

Sorry, somehow I missed this post of yours before now. There is nothing special or unique about the attenuverter circuit, in fact the little utility PCB I'm making supports several types of "AUV" as seen in that other thread you've mentioned.

The "unique" part I referred to is how the PCB mounts and is used. More on that when they're ready for use.

Translated: I took the design from someone else, though I don't understand it, and I revolutionized it by the way it hooks to a PCB,which you or anyone else will likely never see. You'd think because the schematic was posted freely, I'd elaborate freely as well wouldn't you?

Well, I have to agree with the big R here; thanks to the Internet, I was able to tell him to go fuck himself more quickly back in June. I'm just sorry it took me a whole week to figure out he was going to be the biggest disaster to ever hit our fine avocation.

But what if it had taken me "weeks or months"? Imagine how unhappy I'd be then!

And remember when he asked me "permission" for all of my designs? As we say in Minnesota, uffda!

Etaoin: Interesting pics. Those headers seem to be completely different from the ones I use. Mine are completely DIY friendly. I don't need any special tools.

Hi Etaoin!

Indeed, a great many types of perfectly acceptable connectors exist!

One difference between the MTA's and your posted type is that the MTA's grip the header pin from two sides, rather than one side only, pressing the pin between them instead of against the plastic housing. Some feel that this results in a more robust and better long term "gas tight" connection.

You see the same kind of variation in DIP sockets, with single leaf, dual leaf and machined pin types. And Gold versus Tin. Some people swear that it matters, others have had years of good experience with the single contact types.

I personally would choose differently for a synth which will see a lot of road time, compared to one which is studio bound.

Translation: Shit, someone has a different opinion. Hmmm....OK, yeah that's marvelous, Etaoin, though inadequate and of total unreliablity. Sidetrack, Randal - sidetrack. Ah, yes! And for the same reason you have this other unrelated stuff, different metals (good....goood, Randal, keep going) and an old hand like me sure wouldn't want to use those crappy connectors. Good save Randal!

This is exactly one of those Randalisms which make me cringe. Etaoin knows his shit, and either he can look like a jerk telling Randal off, he can get disgusted and leave, or he can ignore it, but Randal gets the points with the newbies, who don't realize this is complete and utter bullshit.

Hi again, Etaoin. I'm glad you posted these. Your pic, header 3 shows detail I'd missed in your earlier connector pic. You DO have 3 side contact with the pin with these. Excellent. Good enough for anybody, I'd say!

FWIW, Waldom/Molex makes an inexpensive yellow-handled pliers crimp tool that will work on these connectors to eliminate even the soldering. Maybe 15USD ? I'm mentioning it for completeness of the information in this thread. It works really well for this type of connector.

Translation: Crap, crap crap!!! OK, damage control. You win this round, Etaoin, but, as long as I'm here, I'll contribute more useless information beyond my first mention of the crimper (which shall not go into the Book of Randal, but shall remain in this thread to prove that I am all about helping the people out here with my infinite completeness).

Funny stuff, Scott, good policy to outwardly be polite yet still allow the in-crowd to giggle and clear your chest! (especially the giggle bit).

Where's the speech synthesis bit from? I'd like to know more about that.

Thanks, Jan!

I suppose simply getting one of those funny speech synth chips wouldn't be DIY, right?

Obviously, it takes years of research and knowing the right people to be able to apply them in secret circuits you can't actually talk about.

I've just had another long day with some excellent work and results towards our SDS3 project.

Can't spill too much right now; but let's just say that the shortcomings of this beastie are about to be handled by its strength. Yes, cryptic. Think of it as a high resonance statement. More feedback later. I gotta go digest some brain food that was dished up for our mutual benefit.

wow!

think of your breadboarding as high in fiber.

If I see one more reference to John Simonton, Craig Anderton or Bernie Hutchins from the Big R, I'm going to scream.

Does anyone here remember what Lloyd Bentsen said to Dan Quayle during the vice-presidential debate some two decades ago?
