I am hardwareless. I can't afford expensive gear, but I want to be able to overdrive my audio through a mixer like I have read about. Is there a kit I can buy to do this? Maybe a small analogue mixer? Any recommendations?

Why not put a good overdrive unit on the send/returns on your mixer and send the audio through. You can mix to taste. I like my Fulltone Overdrive II.

Why do you want that overdrive? You are looking for some analog warmth Laughing or simply some fuzzy fuzz?

Sorry for not being clear. I have heard that you can get some nice boost by pushing the levels up a little too much on an analogue mixer. A little warmth and dirt would be nice Very Happy

I can heartily recommend the old little box called boss bx-4. it's a 4 channel battery-powered mixer with a tremendously powerful overdrive. I use it more to this effect than as a mixer really. They are really cheap and can be found for 30 eur or less.

I noticed this at Analogue Systems site:
"Coming soon rs430 Distortion module"

No other info is available.

You can get most of that from a vintage inspired preamp with a DI. If you like tube distortion you can try something like the UA Solo 610 or Groove Tubes The Brick.

I cannot think of anything suitable that costs around 300 USD right now. I might in a day or two though. Or not..

It is quite possible to find excellent outboard for 300 USD or less, but then we are usually talking about gear that is built for not producing any distortion at all and are either using nice inexpensive opamps or are digital-analog hybrids.

You can of course consider building something yourself, but DIY is not cheap.

Yeah, the wonderful USD... can you link me to something dyi? I'll probably just end up with one of the units you recommended but I would like to start building things. I don't have much experience other than taking ac and dc classes at the local college, installing and replacing parts on marine radar systems and working on alarm/camera systems. None of my work experience is more than troubleshoot/plug and play.

Start with a BOSS DS-1 distortion, around $40. Then add other distortion or overdrive pedals. Or, since you have no hardware, check out plug-ins from Audio Damage. They have a free distortion you can start with.

this might be worth a shot: if you acquire a splitter cable so your mixer output is going back into one of it's inputs as well as your computer or whatever you record with? then you can control the level of feedback with the gain of that channel...

..not overdrive, per se, but i've ordered a "brown sound in a box 2" kit ($60), which (in the audio sample) sounded like a GREAT guitar distortion. the kit comes with the enclosure Smile
