I promoted the DIY forum to the highest level. Now the sub forums show up on the main index page. If there are thoughts about moving some of the other sub forums in Instruments and Equipment into the DIY group, let me know. _________________ --Howard

Whoa - nearly had a heart attack - I came by way of a link, scrubbed around in the TH forum, thought I'd mosey up to DIY and.....it warn't there!
I think perhops putting the Klee, Ray Wilson and TH forums underneath DIY might be more efficient - one has to navigate all the way out to the separate DIY forum otherwise.
Dat's my two sense. _________________ My Site |

bbob stopped by in the chat and asked for an announcement "after the shuffle" as it seems a lot of people bookmark, or use bookmarks from thread follow mail.
I think that it would be appropriate to leave a link in the old place, or post a proper announcement in the top of the forums. I didn't presume to do it myself. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

The old place is gone ... and it's not possible to post on the top level only thing left would be a system wide message like we have 'm on occasions when things crashed & so on ... |

On Jan's suggestion I'm bringing this one over from the Editors forum:
------ snip ------
Now that we have three "technical" forums, DIY Synths, Developers' Corner and Microcontrollers and Programmable Logic, I was thinking that there may be some overlap and a little confusion, especially between DC and MAPL. I aired the issue briefly to Bill, and I think he agrees to some extent.
After I had the above concerns, there has been a restructuring where DIY Synths has become a top level forum. This is very good!
The question then is if there should be some formal relation between those three forums and/or some restructuring. Since a relevant restructuring has just taken place, perhaps Developers' Corner should be grouped with the other technical fora? I could also write a more concrete list, in the welcome message, of possible topics for Developers' corner, like Bill has done for Microcontrollers and Programmable Logic. The idea is to cover the more abstract things, such as programming, languages and tools, instruments, design, algorithms, synthesis methods, product ideas, related issues like maths, physics and so on.
What do you think?
------ snip ------

All that is now done. Weren't we going to set up separate sub forums for Jhable, Fonik, Bugbrand and some others? Does it make sense to do that now. While we are in the midst of this, lets at least consider some of this.
Should we change the DIY Synths name to DIY Synths and Music Programming Languages? Then move Chuck in that bigger forum?
What about Circuit Bending. Should that be in DIY? _________________ --Howard

Circuit bending, yes.
Chuck, max, csound : makes sense to me as well
And Dr. Justice's suggestion above as well.

Where we are dealing with instruments, and specific products, I think it makes sense to keep it to the instruments group. Therefore Nord, Metasonix, Alesis, etc get product based forums, and each OS gets its spot. Also gen cons, and the controllers, etc.
DIY, meaning kit based products, and designs etc, go to the new DIY forums.
I think this is a great reorg, and people will adapt fine. It's a high traffic area. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Yeah, that's a excellent question. I mean, it's clear CK&SC are programming languages *and* it's clear they are synths and I suppose that Reaktor is turing complete as well..
I would say that ChucK & SC tend to lead to different questions then Reaktor and attract different people that use it in a different way. ChucK is a lot more like Java then it is like a MiniMoog... Max is kinda on the fence between the two but I think Reaktor is different, with the programming being optional and so on, I just looked at that forum and the emphasis there is different was well.
First of all ChucK and SuperColider should probably be in the same section and we can throw Csound in there as well. All three are open-scource text-based systems aimed mainly at music and sound. I suppose this could be under the DIY header as well if we wanted to....
Reaktor, Max, etc to me seem closer to something like the NM's but then again if you really wanted to you could claim the NM's are programming languages as well.
I'd personally put Csound, CK and SC in with the DIY stuff now that the DIY corner is moving towards microcontrolers and so on. These seem linked to me and you can link them in practice as well. I'd leave Reaktor where it is. Max seems a big toss-up, I dunno. _________________ Kassen |

Max / PD seems to be treated like a programming environment as well, at least on this forum by people like dewdrop world and acoustic interloper. Didn't actually check though. |

I don't think it's that easy to make this distinction. The difference between a kit and a modular is clear but it's one of the complexity of the building block. A LPF is more complex then a transistor, a board more complex then a patch (most of the time....) so the topics are different.
It's not really clear where that leaves the languages. Both ChucK and SC use a Ugen called "LPF" which is exactly like a ready made filter but they are also quite capable of implementing a filter in the language itself directly at which point topics closer to the DIY corner coming up. It's not that uncommon to see programs that use both levels at the same time, like a modular synth connected to a breadboard. I have one ChucK file here based on a overdrive design of Rob's that started on the NM and also got ported to a breadboard; same design, same principle but it looks quite different in all three forms. The same for a filter design I did, BTW, though the filter only sounds really good in analogue form.
I suppose it's mainly a matter of where and how we want to place the emphasis _________________ Kassen |

Yeah, that's the original intention behind those. They support Java and C as well, BTW, you can simply fill one of those little blocks with C code and it'll run it. A lot of the time they are used more as modular synths.
They do support user build building blocks and at least PD is open. Reaktor isn't open and I don't think it supports user-build externals and most of it's users don't get down to the low level stuff so that makes it less "DIY" to me, it's also a single commercial product..... But admittedly that's quite arbitrary, I do think it's turing complete and that you could port any design posted to the DIY section to Reaktor if you really wanted to. _________________ Kassen |

OK, I moved Chuck, Ckt bending, csound, sc into the DIY/Programming forum. I changed the name to DIY Synths and Music Programming Languages. Maybe better would be DIY Hardware and Software.
Now what about those sub-forums for Fonik and JHaible. Any others, like BugBrand?

Great! I like this reorganization
I edited the Welcome thread in Developers' Corner to include a list of possible topics, inspired by Bill's welcome message in Microcontrollers and Programmable Logic. Hopefully this will work to show that it is meant as a complement to the more specific subforums.
