In another topic,

Durwood pointed out this excellent paper by DB on Interaural Crosstalk.

http://www.xlrtechs.com/dbkeele.com/papers.htm (paper #1Cool

The author describes a physical barrier type system for listening where the barrier isolates the two speakers and eliminates crosstalk; the goal of crosstalk canceler signal processors like RACE or MAP. I think he does a commendable job explaining the undesirable effects of crosstalk.

This paper is highly recommened. I plan to refer to it in my talk on ambiophonic sound at electro-music 2008, http://event.electro-music.com

I'd love to find some old papers by a guy R. Vermeulen from Philips. I came across his name first in a paper by John Mcknight-"why stereo?". It was more of an editorial type paper from 1960, no technical data. Then I saw his named mentioned at the end of a really good paper on stereosonic sound. He was as far as I know the first person to suggest some kind of "ambiophonic" playback setup.

The 'Stereosonic' Recording and Reproducing System: A Two-Channel System for Domestic Tape Records, H.A.M. Clark, G.F. Dutton, and P.B. Vanderlyn. (JAES, vol. 6, no. 2, pp. 102-117, 1958 April).

R. Vermeulen, "Now: Ambiophonic Music, Just as in the concert hall," New York Herald Tribune, Engineers' News Suppl., March 22, 1959.

Notice the dates. I'm curious to know what his version of an ambiophonic system was. ambi=around, phonic=sound. I can see where the terms ambisonic and ambiophonic came from, just a fancy way of saying sound around you or "surround sound".

I have the first paper and it is referenced quite a bit for stereo, and in it the authors were curious as to whatever he was working on.

/end history lesson Smile
