'Modular Synthesis' on electro-music.com Subject description: how can we make it better? do we need to? |
 |
|
I was attracted to this forum initially for a few reasons. I think I was looking for circuit bending or perhaps modular resources/community. I liked the way different areas of interest/study had different 'subforums' of their own. I saw a number of great posts both recent and old that were totally helpful. A google search for 'lunetta circuits' turns up little other than the Lunetta forum here and links to it. I pride myself on my knowledge of granular synthesis, for example. If I can give of some of what I've learned and others do the same, we all benefit. I started an account here mostly because people seemed extremely knowledgeable and active in terms of their musical activity as well as their willingness to share and work with others in the community that is 'people-that-read-and-maybe-post-to' whatever part of the board they're active in. People like Kassel in the ChucK forum, Elektro80 in Modular Synthesis are essential, I think, to helping relative noobs like myself get a grasp on complex/esoteric concepts. Edison Rex is generous with help/advice. Rykhaard has the most incredibly original aesthetics with his stuff! inspiring! there are others. I basically just write this to encourage people to keep or start posting, offer my thanks to those that do. These are exciting times for electronic music. I want to hear what you have to say about it. There are implications to having and using all of this gear! But that's another thread... Shout out to RF -- I can't wait for the WSG!
sincerely and irony-free, as risky as that seems these days sometimes,

Nice post.
And yes.. well.. we should try to explore this further. At the moment "modular synthesis" is really all over the place here, as it should be, but we have yet to truly make this subforum into a place with lotsa crosspollination from the other forums, like the various Clavia related ones and what have you..
We all tend to get very gear oriented, and one possible route might be to make a subforum for each "brand" or format. Still, I don´t think we need to put up what might seem as barriers between the different formats. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

yeah, I totally agree.. as much as separate sections makes sense on one hand, I like to read about all gear, even whether it fits my format(s!) or not. Maybe we just need a sticky to share/discuss music and the techniques we used. 'cross-pollination] is a good way to sum up what I think would benefit us all a great deal. Like: I'll use Plogue Bidule, analog sources, and Cubase to make a track: where to post without making multiple(which is not encouraged, for obvious reasons). Anyway, a few thoughts. More later. |

Good post! With all the splitting off into many subforums the last couple of years there has been a trade off of general knowledge being exchanged vs very specific niche groups and not much of a 'commons area' here as there used to be and (maybe) could be. Also people (like Scott Stites for example) have gotten so involved in subgroups like the Klee group that his time is spent more there than in the general DIY or modular groups - NO criticism intended toward Scott or anyone (quite the contrary!!) but it is a sign of times here - a bit of fragmentation, if you will.
I'd much prefer to hang out here vs say, modularsynth.net because of the diversity and tech expertise here, but there is just not much activity here in this particular modular forum and I find myself not hanging out here too often as a result. A forum depends on a certain level of traffic to keep it interesting and to keep people tuned in to it on a regular basis.
On a related note:
There are SOOOO many great people here - and a big thanks from me to every one of you... but I especially would like to send a shout to Blue Hell who consistently contributes so much good useful info around the different areas of E-M and always with good humor and kind words.
Just my 2 Drachma!

You just brightened up my day, thanks for that! (Had planned a quiet day at work today after having worked the whole weekend ... but instead there was all kinds of stuff not working properly).
About the fragmentation ... discussions tend to go technical often ... for which it makes sense to split things up. It would maybe help when people would spend more time outside their main interest area, but it takes time to keep up with all the postings ... I used to read everything posted here, nowadays I see everything posted, but there will be a day that even that is not possible anymore ... in that respect fragmentation makes sense too ... sort of. |

Thanks for the replies, I think this is an important discussion..
At the most fundamental level, I just wanted to encourage people to post MORE. I feel like sometimes I'm working on something, kind of stuck for one reason or another. It's nice to have a community to turn to for technical problems or just to vent about some fucker selling you a broke-down modular.
Lately (in a much more general way) I've been feeling the drag of living in a culture (USA) that so often places 'cool' before 'community' and 'smug expertise' before 'help.' I'm a visual artist as well as a recovering alcoholic/addict, and my personal (and creative) journey has led me to a place where I'd rather appreciate other people openly than coolly respond or not at all. I've been wondering just how we've gotten to the point where saying 'Your art means a lot to me, thank you" is often percieved by outside parties as 'kissing ass' or just being really weird! People seem reluctant to appreciate anything on a personal level.
Enough of my ramblings, just trying to get across why I bring this stuff up here. I like this board; I like it as is. I'm not attempting to turn electro-music's modular subforum into a lovecult or synth-in, or even source-of-all-things-synth-plus-what-did-you-have-for-dinner or anything like that. I just like to see people give shout-outs and thanks, show respect to anybody who happens to swing through. We have this opportunity to communicate across the globe simply and with pictures, sound, and video. These are amazing times, let's take advantage.
Thanks,
Marck |

+100
I think appreciation is one of the highest states we can aspire too. I try to live it as much as possible. I just posted on another site entirely praising a guy for what I think is a beautiful front panel design and even had to make a joke about "blowing wind up your skirt" being a bit self-concious about being perceived as some kind of suckup. Thanks for your post - I'll freely spread more good juju and fuck the consequences or how anybody perceives it
Had to use an emoticon I've never used before after that... |

(Coming out of 'hiding' just briefly. )
I too must express my gargantuan appreciation for most everyone at this site! The wonderful help and warm feelings from here bring such wonderful equivalencies (word?? ) to my earliest days on the rec.music.synth newsgroup in 1991 and I was at the beginnings of learning most everything.
It's so much the same here from all of the wonderful people. Cheers and thanks especially to Howard, electro80; BlueHell; Scott Stites and many more whom's names've slipped me tongue.
I have to GREATLY apologize to 2 whom shall remain nameless for the moment. I've been wanting to get blank copper PCBs mailed out for almost SIX WEEKS now, but my building of my modular (my sequencer design specifically) I'm minorly starting to fear - of becoming an obsession. Almost every free thinking moment, if I'm not working on it; I'm thinking about it and things to do with and for it - leaving everything else behind "until later".
I'm vowing to get the 2 packages mailed after this coming payday (2 more days) to get that off of my conscience.
Meanwhile - I'll stop "hiding" for the moment and get back to popping out my commentary as I had been, once again.
Finally - full agreeance (as well as respective support) to Telstar! Who gives a shit, about waving an ego around?? (Was guilty of that myself, for too many years). The other side of it is MUCH happier in life - giving positive commentary to others for what they've done - whether another considers it "ass kissing" or not. Who cares?? If someone's doing something that you really appreciate, then let them know!!
In THAT regard - I must greatly and warmly express my DEEP gratitude / thanks to wonderful commentary that I've received as of recently.
I'm not here myself, to try and show off or anything. I'm just sharing the 'crackpot' ideas that come out of my mind, with others, in hopes that others may find some of them useful as well.
- rant off
P.S. Forgot to mention - sorry for rambling. My super powerful computer monster - DIED!! On IT, is my password for EDITING MY WEBPAGE! I can't, until I recover my password. That's why nothing on it has changed, for at least the last couple of weeks. I may be looking for a temporary place to post new videos / schematics / PCBs, etc., until I get figure out what my password IS. |

Ummmmmmmmmm (cough cough) I'll uhhhhh ...... try and 'get back on the wagon'. I've been terrible at using them in excess for quite a few years now. (Even before there were graphic ones). I'll try again, to cut back on them. |

Sometimes there's just no easy way to verbalize a wink!
I think if we all stay pure, level-headed, and genuine, this will lessen the need to use emoticons to untangle that nasty mess known as IRONY.
goofin on myself now..
Ryhkaard, I like your post and I have started to check out your songs. Liking them so far, more on that later!
(I think I overuse exclamation points. It's a problem! <--- [ see, it's not that big a deal, it doesn't require that.. BUT, people might think I'm bummed out about my exclamatory overuse if I don't jokingly {!}. It's on my list of 'ways to better myself and improve overall internet ettiquette.'] I do like brackets though, of all flavors. |
