I can't find any reference to this on Google, neither a blanket ban nor just Tangerine Dream.
IMO, the Vatican does enough screwy stuff without the need to make up more stories

Then you're not looking hard enough James, I found reference to the incident on the first page whenI googled it. It was also recently mentioned on the BBC (so it must be true huh?).
Apparently in 1974 TD played at Reims cathedral in france, and the audience behaved in such a way that the vatican banned TD from performing in it's churches ever again and had to re-consecrate the cathedral.
The story goes that they were then invited to perform at the protestant Coventry cathedral in the UK.
It suppose it may not be true but if that's the case, it wasn't me that made the story up. |

That's right. This has been known 'forever' by TD fans.
BTW, I have the recording of that very show

OK, fair enough. Sounds to me that they objected less to the music as such, than to audience behavior -- which they have a right to do as it isn't public property.

I think if people pissed on my living room floor, I wouldn't want them back either.
Seems a stretch to suggest that the Vatican hates Tangerine Dream - although, it's also stupid for the Vatican to ban only TD from playing in cathedrals, when any other rock/pop act could conceivably generate a similar circumstance.

| I've been reading this thread for a while and think its amusing and enlightened, if sometimes a tad obtuse. Why do religious people feel threatened or offended by such plays on words and philosphical concepts? Personally, I find the religious posting above offensive.... |

Yeah it's old .. and it started with simple trolling .. but people try to make the best of it, often easing things ... reducing the fear ... I like that part of it.
And erm .. pissing in a cathedral ... hmm ... must have been a bad situation there |

That´s right and even Edgar Froese knows about that one as well. He tells about that event on camera in the documentary "Kraftwerk and the electronic revolution".
This is actually a pretty decent documentary. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Agreed, as evidence seems to suggest that catholics are allowed to listen to Tangerine Dream.. well.. perhaps not.. what if they are listening to Tangerine Dream while considering to use contraceptives?
BTW.. Tangerine Dream.. wasn´t that a swedish rubber thingie with a special flavor ...back in the early 80s? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Nah, but before the russian invasion of Afghanistan you could buy inexpensive and brilliant opium laced hashish over here in Europe. You actually didn´t need to put on Tangerine Dream´s Zeit in order to .. well.. claiming to have heard it.. and those how did listen to it were all blinged out on the same shit anyway so they weren´t able to make sense of what they had heard. Nostalgia. Nasty russians put an end to the European counter culture. Possibly not a crime against humanity.. but darn close.. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Personally I don't find that offensive. Sad in the context of today's scientific insights, a bit frightening in terms of its disjunction with that context and the psychological dissonance such disjunction with reality engenders. But not in any way offensive. Had the writer implied the right to interfere with those who do not believe in their god, that would have been offensive.
Again, I think it is important to respect everyone's right to hold stupid misguided beliefs so long as they do the same for others and especially me _________________ The question is not whether they can talk or reason, but whether they can suffer. -- Jeremy Bentham |

That's not actually what I was suggesting. I was making a joke in reference to mosc's idea that the sisteen chapel was a suitable venue for a electro music festival.
It certainly wasn't my intention to offend anyone.
Perhaps my sense of humor is a bit dry for you?

What I like best about this thread is that it's still the original poster's only post! With a thread like this, who needs to ever post again? _________________ We are selling emotions, there are no emotions in a grid. -mwagener

Ah yes! The perrenial "anti-religious electro-music" thread. It's like a stinky, yet warm, old sloppy joe which slowly rises through the laundry pile and appears again. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

I wasn't offended by the aforementioned offensive post. I just couldn't really make sense of it. If anything, the idea of breadboarding Jesus is hilarious.
BREADBOARDED JESUS
Your own breadboarded Jesus
Someone to plug in your diodes
Someone who cares
Your own breadboarded Jesus
Someone to switch your resistors
When the power ain't there
Feeling un-tuned
Waiting for a boon
Claire de la lune
Is my favourite tune
Lift up the resistor
I'll be your 'lectro sister
Take it apart
When the damn thing won't start
Things in your cart
That need to depart
I will deliver
An electronic liver
Switch on and shut up
Switch on and shut up

Well as long as we're feeding the thread...
Here's a puzzling "lamebrain quote of the day" sent by a friend.
| Quote: | There's a broader point here. Why the big push for black holes by
liberals, and big protests against any objection to them? If it turned
out empirically that promoting black holes tends to cause people to
read the Bible less, would you still push this so much? Certainly
there is no practical justification to pushing black holes; no one
will ever be helped by them in any way.--Andy Schlafly 12:03, 13
