OK, guys, I got this PM from Teknik, having to do with what Randal so wordily played out in the touch controller thread. I am by no means a legal expert, so please - whaddayall think?

Hi Scott, would it be a problem if i start a thread with s3rg3 modules single sided pcb re-draws?

Ok - I just clicked (by checking) who this teknik guy is -- '2012' over at the Muff-forum and he's certainly sailed a bit close to the wind and in quite annoying / wrong ways before. He does have some experience and good views I think, but equally he can come across as a prick.

I don't know -- it IS very sticky territory.. I think he has reverse engineered some modules (that's the sort of stuff I've picked up at the muff-forum)..
I think something happened there in a thread about the Bananalogue VCS - maybe he posted a schematic or something like that and was then asked to take it down. Dunno really..

For what its worth, there's some Serge schematics (and PCB foils) on Ken Stone's site. But maybe this pushes too far.

Interested to hear the discussions though.

(Matthias - if you ain't got it yet - s3rg3 is serge!)

That's OK, Matthias - it took a little while for it to sink into me, too. Laughing

Thanks for that info, Tom. From that touchpad thread, I did pick up that there had been some interaction between Teknik and Randaleem.

Yes - it does seem sticky. The whole Serge thing is sticky even before it comes to this.

Tom, did I ever mention you're worth your weight in gold?

I think this should be a definite "No".

Scott,

Sorry I've been fairly quiet lately...too much "real world" stuff lately! Anyway, I don't feel comfortable with pushing the Serge envelope any more than it is. Case in point: I've been thinking of an Oberheim SEM clone off and on and with recent announcements that Tom Oberheim is re-issuing his own SEM, I've dropped that project like a hot potato. I couldn't bare to deny Tom O any possible revenue....even small amounts.

I think clones should be discouraged unless there have been significant mods/changes added or permission of the original designer has been granted. I think that's the ideal that most everyone here has been working with anyway and I think if you PM him back in those words, he'll understand.

I sent this reply. If any admin disagrees, please contact teknik. I doubt if you do, but there you go.

Quote:
Hi Steve,

As much as I'd like to build some Serge stuff, the consensus is that electro-music would prefer not to host any more cloned layouts of Serge (or any other current maker's) designs, unless there is some sort of agreement from Serge on the cloners part to do so. A lot of the Serge stuff is in production by Rex, and I can see that there are some CGS boards out there as well. We're not entirely certain that Serge himself would appreciate it or not (likely not). As STG pointed out, some things have become almost pedestrian (touch plate type keyboards), but a vast number of Serge's designs are anything but that (for example, the Wavefolder and slope generator designs). Providing layouts of original designs that perform these more esoteric functions is obviously perfectly fine, if the design is posted by the designer, but posting unauthorized clones of those designs is asking for trouble. Can I put the word "design" more times in one sentence? Very Happy

Just going over some of the more clonish things that have been posted, the designs are usually either authorized by the original designer, or so modified in functionality as to be markedly different.

So thanks for offering, but we feel inclined to pass on your offer.

Best Regards,
Scott

Oh, good - I can sleep well tonight knowing Thor's hammer will not come crashing down through my ceiling. Laughing

Got an immediate reply - he's cool with the answer, and said that's why he'd asked in the first place. So all's well in electro-land.

Cheerio,
Scott

Not that angry - haven't really had a reason to be before this guy. It seems to him, I'm conspiring to part people from their money with a useless piece of gear, and Bill is in the business of wringing the unsuspecting dry. What a maroon.

Actually, the ignore button is over where you and I see the IP button. Seems like one of the admins changed his avatar into an ignore button as well. Laughing

Too bad that we don´t have a button for locking a bull-seeking missile onto Randal´s lair.

Teknik? That is the same dude who went bananas over the bad sound quality of the RME converters. I vaguely remind those posts. The way I remember them seems to suggest that he really doesn´t know too much about anything.
