Nord Rack 2x: Newb! 2 questions... |
 |
|
So hello Nord community I am now the proud owner of a Nord Rack 2x and so far I like what I hear. Very flexible, yet basic without sounding like it. My cup of tea.
Anyway, I have 1 or 2 newb questions so I apologise, but it'd be helpful (oh and I am referencing the manual but so far I'm still stuck on these points):
Firstly, a question about outputs... I have the A/B outputs plugged into my mixer and C/D directly into my interface (for recording audio without having to go through the mixer). I would simply like to assign a duplication of A/B to C/D so when my MIDI is done, I can record to audio. However I've tried all of the settings in 'Out Mode' and can't actually get any sound out of C/D?!?! Is it in some way related to the slots or MIDI channels? How do I set this up?
Secondly, a question about factory reset/initialize. This unit was 2nd hand and I have no idea what sounds are factory and which are the previous owner (I know they will only be in the first 4 RAM banks), but I can't see an option to initialize the unit so it is as it left the factory. How is this possible?
Thanks for your time - any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers, Sidx |

| Oh and one more thing... the software version is still V.1.0 I believe. On the Clavia site there is no mention of any updates to this - is that right? |

How do I set this up? | This is a tricky one… First of all why has the NordLead2(X) this strange set up? The original NordLead has only two Outs, A and B. C and D were added, but the design didn’t changed that much, so C and D can be directed to A and B, but not the other way around! The only option is to use only sounds which uses only two Programs and load both into Slot A and C, Slot B and D respectively. By setting A and B, C and D to the same Midi channel respectively, it should work. Troublesome are factory Performances. | Quote: | | Secondly, a question about factory reset/initialize. How is this possible? | At http://nm-archives.electro-music.com/020_NordLead2/021_Patches/ you’ll find the Program Archive. Take a look at 3100 to 3400 and us a tool like http://nm-archives.electro-music.com/020_NordLead2/023_Miscellaneous/NordGenerator_Editor/ to get the Programs from the computer into synthesizer. | Quote: | | Oh and one more thing... the software version is still V.1.0 I believe. Thanks for the reply/help!
I think I need to understand this a little clearer. Firstly, what is the best output mode to use for general purpose? I am only likely to use 1 sound at a time at this stage and my system is geared up to record in stereo. So should I use Out Mode 1 or 3? The manual says that for Out Mode 3 all programs always appear with voices alternating between Outputs A & B? That sounds strange (maybe I don't undeerstand). Or should I just stick to Out Mode 1 and record in stereo anyway?
What I don't understand is that a mono sound appears out of both outputs doesn't it (A&B for example)? Yet, what if you place a sound on each of the 4 slots? Do they only sound out of 1 output? I'm confused! Am I overcomplicating myself here and should I be thinking in mono?!
Anyway, how do I now get my MIDI sequence over to the outputs C & D now to record to my computer (and include any knob data etc)? I select the same MIDI channel (1) on C & D and just reselect that sound? But on which bank if it's mono C or D or both? Mono/stereo? I still don't get it!
Secondly... thanks for the links. However when I click on the /020_NordLead2/021_Patches/3100_NL2X_FactoryPresets_00 for example each of the syx files are only 1kb and only load some weird text. If I download them they are 4kb. Is this right? And do I have to do each one individually?
Also I don't have a PC so can't use Nord Gen Editor. I do have SysEx library will this help?
Agh! I'm getting new equipment headache! And I'm determined to understand this so I can get the most out of it and have it working how I want it.
Any more info would be helpful! Thanks!!! |

In your set up using only one Program in Slot A set the Output mode [Shift + Out Mode (= SlotB)] > [1.Ab] and this will sound the described stereo in Out A and B through your mixer to hear it. Also upload the same Program into Slot C and set Output Mode C and D by [Shift + 2x Out Mode] > [1.cd]. Output C and D will enter your computer to be recorded into your program. Both Slot A and C have to active to be heard… BTW did you know you can split input lines? I should do this using a PatchBoard… Not that expansive, BTW see http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/PX1000.aspx or something... | Quote: | | So should I use Out Mode 1 or 3? Or should I just stick to Out Mode 1 and record in stereo anyway? | Stick to [1.Ab]. Mode 3 is a trick to play with the stereo spreading for long and sustaining sounds like strings without using the Unison mode (This last one reduces the number of voices…) | Quote: | | What I don't understand is that a mono sound appears out of both outputs doesn't it (A&B for example)? | Not if you choose [4.Ab] | Quote: | | Yet, what if you place a sound on each of the 4 slots? Do they only sound out of 1 output? | That’s right. You have to use the Panning on the desk. | Quote: | | I'm confused! Am I overcomplicating myself here and should I be thinking in mono?! | Whatever you like! I don’t want to control your thoughts I should make it myself easier using a Patch Bay! Output A and B into two channels and it comes out in 2 times these signals… | Quote: | | Anyway, how do I now get my MIDI sequence over to the outputs C & D now to record to my computer (and include any knob data etc)? I select the same MIDI channel (1) on C & D and just reselect that sound? But on which bank if it's mono C or D or both? Mono/stereo? I still don't get it! | All Programs in the memory are available to all Slots, so they can be loaded in all Slots. All Programs are in essence mono, only Unison delivers it in a mock-up stereo (little delay on one of the two, besides detuning). So, in a way, the Lead is thinking mono already. Why shouldn’t you? | Quote: | | Secondly... thanks for the links. Is this right? | Strange… I downloaded them too and they are only 139 bytes… | Quote: | | And do I have to do each one individually? | Yes, of course! You can’t compare complete Banks! | Quote: | | Also I don't have a PC so can't use Nord Gen Editor. I do have SysEx library will this help? | I don’t know, cause I never tried this. If it works or not, tell it here! | Quote: | | Agh! I'm getting new equipment headache! And I'm determined to understand this so I can get the most out of it and have it working how I want it. | Take an asprine, take a cigar, take a shot of gin or take your wife, whatever works for you! | Quote: | | Any more info would be helpful! | Well, I mostly buy my asprins at the drugstore. The rest you have to find out yourself…You’re welcome, but I wrote that in the beginning of my previous post, didn’t I?

ok - great I think I get it now :::Clap::: My computer has gone to have some work done on it so I can't try anything until tomorrow now.
Thanks for the response again... you sure seem to know what you're talking about.
Is there anywhere else I can get those sysex files?
I think there could be more questions to come over the next few weeks as I get my head round this. I've not used much MIDI for years... It's all been softsynths, but basically I hate them!
Thanks again |

Mac's are very hard to keep indoors... | Quote: | | Thanks for the response again... you sure seem to know what you're talking about. | Well, I know how to create that impression. Clavia is monitoring this Forum for sure and I think it will cause many laughs in Stockholm | Quote: | | Is there anywhere else I can get those sysex files? | I don't think so. I search for many years and this is all I found, at least for free. | Quote: | | I think there could be more questions to come over the next few weeks as I get my head round this. | That's okay. I have learned a lot answering questions like this. You are the first one who wants to create a special set up connecting the synth parallel with the computer input. I assume it's all because you want to correct the quality later on or is it to mimic a softsynth configuration. Beware, the NordLead doesn't do any rendering or bounces. | Quote: | | I've not used much MIDI for years... | The manual clearly states that if you overwrite a patch and wish to return it to the factory setting that midi files will be available from the Clavia website. As far as I can see they're not there! I'm suprised that these aren't available more easily? Is it worth mailing tech support? I'd really like to 'initialize' the unit so to speak. |

I can't find the posting anymore, so I'll have to create a double in the attachment files.
I have the four files in Midi.
(And one extra)

I hope you have use for *.mid files...
This is the only place (electro-music.com) where to find these.
Spread the word...
