Electro-music.com Chat Room now operational |
|
|
After a bit of discussion and a lot of code hacking and testing, the new electro-music.com chat room is operational. To use the chat room, just click on the "Chat Room" menu on the upper right of every forum page.
The chat software is a Java Application and it's been tested on PC and MAC. I had trouble using Mozilla, but aftering upgrading to 1.8a everything seems to work fine. It works with Safari and with IE.
I don't know how much use we'll make of this, but sometimes there is a need for chatting and if members arent logged on to AIM or something, it's difficult to do so. With this facility, any member can get on and join immediately.
The chat room also supports private connections which my be appropriate sometimes.
Thanks to everyone who helped test this, especially Static Strobe Emitter and JKN.
If you have any feedback, questions, or complaints, please post them here.
EDIT - Sept 30, 2005:
If you don't have Java or just want to use another program you can go to
irc.blitzed.org
port 6667
channel #electro
on any IRC program of which there are many.
EDIT - May 18, 2006
Javascript is a sort of a scripting language built into the web browser. For running Java programs (not the same as Javascript) you need to install the Java Runtime Environment (also called JRE or "Java engine"). Most bowsers automatically install the JRE, but some do now. If you need the Java engine, the see http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

I tried using the chat room, but all I get is a blue box with a load of emoticons across the middle. How do you actually use it? _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

Nah, it says "done" and there's no traffic, so I don't think anything is loading. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

If you have IE, try this link
It won't work on Firefox. It will test your Java installation. _________________ --Howard

Ah, don't worry about it mosc.
I just found out I don't even have Java!
And it's about 190MB to download which I can't be bothered with at the moment.
Maybe I'll get it from TAFE when I go back, they've got a faster connection than me, and I can do it during the day. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

I presume everyone's chatting in the new chatroom. Unfortunately I think the novelty wears off quite quickly- as it's like strolling around in the buff!
I think where this could work well would if you could choose individual members to talk to rather than everybody all at the same time. |

It is actually the "old" chatroom. It has been resurrected.

Tom, you can actually do this. When you are in the chat room, double-click on the name of someone who is also logged on (list on upper right of the window). It will open a new window where you have have a private converstion. _________________ --Howard

elektro80 and v-un-v have had good luck with OSX, but I haven't. It may be better to use iChat. I tried updating to the 1.5 version of Java on my Mac and the install didn't work. It said you need 10.4 to run it. _________________ --Howard

It would be nice to see more people taking advantage of the chat room. During our live webcasts the chat room becomes the center of attention. _________________ --Howard

I just tried it again. (I've been interested in trying it out for a loooong time) But it's the same as it was in September. Just a line of emoticons. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

That probably means you don't have a good Java engine loaded or you have Java disabled in your brower or OS secruity settings. Can you run other Java apps OK? _________________ --Howard
