Nord Lead 3 OS Update |
 |
|
Good evening,
I posted this on another thread, but thought I'd try posting a thread of its own.
I'm trying to update the NL3 OS, something I've done before successfully, but it's not working for me now. I'm using Sonar 8 as my sequencer; when I load the midi file into a midi track and press play, it doesn't seem like any information is being transmitted -- the NL3 continues to wait for the transmission. I know the midi connection works, because when I cancel out of the process, I can trigger notes from the piano roll in Sonar, etc. Also, transmitting Sysex files, both through midi-ox and the Sonar Sysex view, works fine.
One thing that also seems different this time is that when I open the midi file in the midi track, the only information I can see in the track is a series of controller lines, all the same value. The last time I updated the OS, which was years ago, I seem to recall that there was a lot of variable controller information in there.
I've also asked this question over at the Cakewalk support forums, but thought I'd try here too.
Thanks.

| Midi-Ox can only send sysex files, right? The OS is a .mid. There must be something basic I'm confused about. |

| By the way, your "detailed information" link for the 1.20 OS brings up a blank page. |

Have you used the [Performance mode+Store] combination while starting the synth?

Hello, Wout. Yes, I'm using the correct procedure on the Nord; it's waiting for the OS. The problem seems to be sending it from my sequencer.
I'm told on the Sonar forums that I can't transmit an OS using a midi track within Sonar; I have to use Sonar's Sysex View. However, Sonar will not let me open the .mid in it's Sysex View. Neither will Midi-Ox. I can send Sysex files fine with either Midi-Ox or the Sonar Sysex View, but it doesn't seem like I can send .mid files that way. When I try to open the .mid file in the Sysex View, it says "Bad info in file: missing F0 or F7."
I have a feeling there's something basic I'm missing here.
The missing page is:

Hi,
I’ll send you the two versions of OS 1.20 I have on my computer.
I think the V1.20b will work…
The blank page isn’t ours, but belongs to Clavia.

That does look like it's gonna work. However, I haven't done it yet, because I'm worried that once I update to 1.20, I won't be able to go back to an earlier OS. A year or two ago I went back to vers. 1.08 because I liked using the earlier arp function -- remember that? I still have that OS as a .mid file, and I'm pretty sure that's the file I installed from. I just don't know how I did it!
The main reason I want to update to vers. 1.20 is because I want to install some program banks that look like they were created in 1.20, and I haven't been able to install them in 1.08. Is it correct that you can't install programs created in a different operating system? And would that also mean that I can't save programs I created in 1.08 and then install them in 1.20?
Thanks for your help. |

As far as I know it's all backwards compatible, not forward...
OS 1.20 shouls loas OS 1.08; SO 1.08 doesn't do OS 1.20

| I'm gonna wait and see if anyone on the Sonar forums says anything...I can't believe that I was able to send a midi file before, and can't now. I know this is ridiculous, but I'd like to be able to switch between operating systems if I wanted to. |

The plot thickens. I noticed that when I'm playing the midi file in my sequencer, when it's finished playing, the nord display says, "end receive error."
Also, I tried running the 1.20 auto-updater. It doesn't work either -- when I try it, it says it can't detect a Nord Lead 3. The Nord just sits there, in update mode. |

| Are there any system settings that would prevent update mode from working properly? |

I'm trying one more time w/ the sequencer tempo nice and slow...I can't think of anything else. Global midi settings? I can't believe that any of the system settings would affect update mode.
These multiple attempts have also made the currently installed OS act wonky a couple times -- the slots stop working properly. I've had to reboot a couple times to get it to straighten out. Kind of scary.
Could this be a hardware issue in the keyboard itself? Flash memory corrupted? Everything else seems to work fine. |

Ah -- got the auto-updater to work. I guess I didn't have a midi out back to the updater, and it needed a "handshake"?
So now I'm in 1.20, but, like I said, I'd like to be a prima donna and switch between operating systems. Maybe that's too much to ask at this point. But I swear, I was able to do this before....
So that means the keyboard itself is working properly, I guess. |

1.20 is running ok...it seems slightly more sluggish than 1.08...one thing that bothers me about it is the navigation -- when you move up and down through banks, it resets each bank to its first program -- so let's say you're in 7:48 and move down, it'll put you in 6:1 rather than 6:48. Is there a way around this?
I was messing around with the new arpeggiator, which I was complaining about in the past...the issue that I originally had with it is still there, but I like it better. In general, I think the NL3 is a devalued instrument. I'm sure you've heard this before, but the presets are somehow misleading about its true capabilities.
I backed up all the 1.08 banks as sysex and can upload them no problem. I still wish I could figure out why I can't transmit midi banks, though. |

| Note -- the 1.08 operating system was not acting "wonky," that was me being stupid. But I still wish I could figure out how to update via midi. I don't think the cakewalk forums are gonna have any other suggestions.... |
