Reset NL2X to factory sounds |
 |
|
Hi,
I've just aquired a Nord Lead 2X second hand.
The previous owner however did edit many presets but doesn't have a .syx (Sysex) backup of all the factory programs, performances, and percussion kits.
1. Can someone help me resetting programs, performances, and percussion kits to factory sounds by sending me a .syx file conaining the backup of all the factory sounds?
2. As I have no clue on how to use .syx
files, what is the process to follow to load these into the Nord Lead 2X as well as the process to follow if I want to backup all or individual sounds from the Nord Lead 2X? Is there any free editor under Windows Vista existing that could suit this need? I have installed on my computer Changeit, Midi-Ox, and NordGen but am not sure if the are compatible with the Nord Lead 2X. Regarding the NordGen, I read that some people happened to have a bug and that files are bigger than required. So, is the NordGen reliable and if I use it, is there a risk to damage the Nord Lead 2X's internal memory?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Chris |

In the archive all data is only single Programs.
NordGen will work fine when using the 'Clear' option first when uploadin from the synth to the computer.
BTW are Percussion banks also RAM?
(I have a NR, NL2, so why should I buy a NL2X? )

Hi Chris,
I am using the program MIDI-OX you mentioned for dumping, saving and restoring complete banks between my PC (Windows XP) and my NL2X - in both directions it works fine.
So I can easily do security copies of the RAM program banks as *.syx-files including the percussion programs.
Somewhere here in the forum you can find the factory programs as sysex-files to reset the factory sounds.
Good luck!

If somebody likes to send us the SysEx of the other six ROM Program banks, the Percussion banks and the Performance banks, all will be there.
No need to do this in one go.
A bank a month will do
Also to be used by NL and NL2 users!

Many thanks guys!
Would be great indeed if somebody could post the .syx of the other factory banks, percussion kits and performances.
- melmac,
I have downloaded the .syx mentioned by Wout (thnaks Wout).
As I don't know how to use MIDI-OX, how should I get it working?

Thanks Wout,
Sorry to be a pain but I'm quite new in the .syx jungle
Is it correct to do the following:
- if I want to send individual patches to the NL2X, I should connect the MIDI cable to MIDI-IN on the NL2X? Right?
- if I want to receive individual patches from the NL2X, I should connect the MIDI cable to MIDI-OUT on the NL2X? Right?
Any idea in which menu/functions to go in MIDI-OX to get it working?
"All press [Shift+OctaveDown]; single Programs press [Shift+OctaveUp]"
> I suppose it's on the NL2X? Are there other settings to do on the NL2X such as global midi channel... ?
Thanks,
Chris |

Hi Chris,
so it`s melmac again. I am sitting at my "music PC" and try to tell you step-by-step how to do the thing with Midi-Ox:
- connect your MIDI-Interface-USB-cable: USB (of course) in the PC, both MIDI-cables in the NL2X (In and OUT)
- start Midi-Ox, slect "view" and "SysEx...": a new window opens
- select any bank on your NL2X and press "SHIFT" and "DUMP ALL" on the NL2X. Then 99 Programs and the corresponding percussion programs are sent to the pc.
- in Midi-Ox: Select "Command Window" and "Save As..." and a typical file-save window opens that asks you for a file name. Select the path you want to store your files, put in a file name and Enter - so the complete Bank is stored in the PC as a security copy.
- of course this also works with single programs with the button "SHIFT" and "DUMP ONE" on the NL2X.
To restore a complete Bank from PC to NL2X do the following:
- cable connection and starting of the SysEx part of Midi-Ox: see above
- in Midi-Ox: Select "Command Window" and "Load File"
- select the file you want to send to the NL2X and open it
- Choose on the NL2X the complete Bank or the single Program you want to restore
- and select "in Midi-Ox File" and "Send SysEx File..." and Enter - that`s it.
Please: At first (!) do a copy of all the RAM-Banks (1...P9 to 3...3P9) so you can save the state of your NL2X how it is now. As Wout said, during Midi operations sometimes strange things could happen...
And sending SysEx files from the PC to the NL2X will definately overwrite existing Banks and Programs!!!
Try it and good luck!

Hi Chris,
sorry, but I have forgotten one thing to receive a SysEx dump:
| melmac wrote: |

- start Midi-Ox, slect "view" and "SysEx...": a new window opens

- After selecting „View“ and „SysEx...“ select in the SysEx-Window the command „Sysex“ and „Receive Manual Dump...“
- Then press „DUMP ALL“ on the NL2X.
- When ready press „Done“ in the Window on the PC and then you can „Save as...“
Try it again. Your screenshot shows that the connection between the PC and the Nord ist fundamentally working.
Best wishes,
melmac |

Thanks Melmac.
- Receving and saving dump all from the NL2X is now working in MIDI-OX.
- Howerver, Sending .syx still doesn't work: appears to be transmitting data to the NL2X but nothing changed on the NL2X. Should I set the NL2X in some kind of receive mode? Id so, how to do it? What is the correct process of sending .syx?
- I also saw performances in .mid format. How tho send these to the NL2X (via MIDI-OX)?
Thanks again.

Chris |

You are now working with 'Dump All', so complete banks.
In practise this will only be used (down and uploading) when saving the complete bank as an archive. Mostly one works with single Programs...
Work with these first, because uploading into the synth isn't destructive to the memory! Stay in Program mode and send a single file. Only the LED's should change, not the LCD screen.
Maybe this can help you to get an overlook?

Thanks Wout,
I'm actually trying to send a .syx containing only one program but can't manage to. Here is a description on the way I proceed. Please help me to undrestand what's wrong:
1. Connecting MIDI OUT cable to MIDI IN of the NL2X and MIDI IN cable to MIDI OUT of the NL2X
2. Switching on NL2X and selecting the bank program where I want to store
3. connecting USB side of the MIDI cable to the computer
4. Opening MIDI-OX and setting the midi input and output to "USB midi" via the menu "options > MIDI settings" and making sure that "Options > Pass Sysex" is checked
5. In MIDI-OX, going to menu "View > Sysex" and in the window that opens, opening the desired .syx file that I want to transfer to the NL2X (corresponding to the bank program selected on the NL2X at step 2 / ex.: "0002VelocityStrings.syx" for bank program "1.2" of the NL2X) via the menu "File > Send Sysex file...". Then, a blue progress bar appears briefly in MIDI-OX and that's it.
6. When I go back to the NL2X keyboard (still with the program bank selected / ex.: bank program "1.2") and play a key, the sound appears not to have been updated.
Is there another parameter to activate on the NL2X.
Thanks and sorry but I'm novice in .syx |

Press [Shift+MidiCh=Unison] TWICE and you will enter Global Midi. Using Up&Down arrows set this channel to 16.
Does this work?

Just for your interest, the uploaded Program doesn't go directly to the memory, but first to the Buffer. You have to save it by hand!
Wout
Hmm...
I thought I had written about Global Midi in the archive already, but I can't find it.
To tired after my holidays, I guess...
Time to get to work, where I can have some rest |

Hi Wout,
Thanks.
Global MIDI channel on the NL2X is set to 16.
How can I save in NL2X memory a program sent to the buffer?
Have some rest.

Hi Wout,
Sending still doesn't work.
I did the process like described in my previous forum post and did the following:
... (see previous forum post) ...
6. Pressing the [Store] button on the NL2X, selecting a bank program and pressing on the [Store] button again. But I still can't get the sound that I did transfer via MIDI-OX (.syx file with one sound) and Global MIDI channel is set to 16. The patch didn't change at all.
Should I activate something else on the NL2X?
Note: found all the .syx program banks at http://nm-archives.electro-music.com/020_NordLead2/021_Patches/ except 'Program Bank 0' (clearly for techno, ...) Any idea where I can get it?
Regards,
Chris

| tritonchris wrote: | | ... Should I activate something else on the NL2X? | No, on the Lerad2 there isn't a receiving mode or something like that. The data is uploaded into the buffer.
It could be the Program VelocityStrings is already in the buffer? When it is in already in the memory location 1.2 it wouldn't change. Actually it does, but it is replaced by the same data.
Are you able to use NordGenerator? Midi-OX is rather complicated, where NordGen delivers the settings of the knobs. The bug isn't that important as long one uses the Clear option befiore uploading iknto the computer.
Midi-OX is very useful to investigate the Midi itself, but also a highly 'agressive' tool, because it claims all Midi processing, even more than CuBase does...
I have the same problem I don't owe a NL2X, so I have no way to get the data. I will try to find a way. The distributor isn't an option, because now-a-days opening a Clavia box devaluates the synth being 'second hand' with the concequences of the selling prize...

Are you sure that the MIDI input works on the NL2X?
| tritonchris wrote: | | ... Should I activate something else on the NL2X? | I don’t have a NL2 (a G1 and G2X instead), so please forgive me if what I suggest does not apply.
Many MIDI synths have a system function where you can set the synth system exclusive ID. This is useful for when you have more than one of the same synths and want to be able to send sysex to only a particular synth, while the other synth(s) will ignore the sysex. If this is possible on the NL2X, then it is possible that the previous owner of this NL2X may have changed the sysex ID from the factory default. This would cause the NL2X to ignore any sysex that has a different sysex ID than the factory default (assuming that the factory preset program bank sysex files are saved with a default sysex ID).
Another thing to check is if there is a patch memory protection turned on. _________________ varice |

In the Archive it's all set to 16 (works best using Program Change).
All NordLead (1, 2 1nd 2X) use the Model ID $04.
