NR2x problem - reproducible Subject description: Self-modifying sounds |
 |
|
Hello all.
After a very long absence I am getting back into making music. I have just bought a NR2x and a Doepfer MAQ16/3 sequencer and am, mostly, delighted with the quality. BUT, there is a definite problem with my NR2x. At first I tought it wad the sequencer sending unwanted MIDI data but I have completely ruled that out now as I can reproduce the same behavior every time with just the NR2x and a set of headphones. So nothing other than those are plugged in... and of course the power cord
So I power up, then for example, set prog 1 to slot 1, prog 18 to slot 2. Midi channels are off on all slots.
So, with slot 1 selected, I hit trig and get a nice fat round bass sound, then select slot 2, press trig and get the expected sound... now I select slot 1 again, hit trig... and get a sort of muted bass with no depth. To get the correct sound back I just quickly send prog 2 to slot 1 and then back to prog 1 and i sounds as it should again.
I get this effect with most sounds whether in ram or rom, and in some cases it sounds as if switching active slots results in the prog in the last activated slot inherit some of the settings of the previous sound. Just to be clear, nothing else is being touched apart from the slot buttons and the trig.
Now as I said, I am new at this but surely this cannot be the correct behaviour ?
I have searched this forum and have seen at least a couple of people having similar issues but this is reproducible.
I would be interested in getting opinions of more experienced users here. Also, does anybody have experience with support at Clavia ?
Many thanks ! |

A parameter is set by potmeters which generates 128 positions. In fact, a potmeter can do much more settings then that. So pots become instable in time, which results the parameter value can change by just one value.
If a Program is uploaded from the Memory the settings of the knobs isn't the same as the parameter values of the Program. As soon as the pot changes the value (just by one) the parameter will jump to the value of the knob (immediate function) and the sound will change.
Press [Shift+LFO1 wave form] to enter a simple test mode. The LCD will show a figure. If this value changes after a while a pot has to be replaced. The figure will stay jumping one higher and one lower.
To find out which pot is wrong set all knobs to [0]. Just set one knob to 64. As soon as the figure will change all the time the particular pot is wrong.
Clavia Support are the distributors, or at least one is re-directed there. They will check if the synths is sold by them...
Better take the feedback entrance.

Hi Wout,
First of all, thanks for the welcome
I have done the test you suggested. I did a few hours testing this evening and only had the "self-modifying" issue once. I did not see where it came from. The figure in the LCD did not change.
However narrowed down two distinct issues.
1/ If I only use slot 1 (all 3 others are set to midi off, and remember the NR2x is being controlled only by a Doepfer sequencer), and change the prog of another slot(2,3 or 4) I don't get any modification on slot 1 until I select a prog with has a different Mod Wheel Destination... at that point the only slot actually generating any sound is modified.
2/ Again, with the same settings, so the sequencer triggering slot 1 and all other slots set to midi off. I activate either slot 2,3 or 4 and modify some parameters, when I then activate slot 1, it's sound changes.
I think there are definite issues here that are not just my inexperience. The device is brand new, bought not 2 weeks ago. I will take it back and ask for an exchange unit.
Thanks again !! |

Pfoei...
It's hard for my (non native speaker) to follow what you are doing...
Any way, try Midi Glabal for a change. Press [Shift+2xMidi] and scroll to channel 16.
What happens now?
