yes they can be... try the Elektrostudio bundle -nice instruments and popular. Computer Music magazine had a suite of free plug in instruments available at one time too -you should also be able to track them down easily.
The thing to bear in mind though, is that many of the free VSts have been made by amateurs using synthedit, pluggo, reaktor and the like. Some can be pretty buggy, while others a bit CPU heavy because of unwieldy coding. There are many great sounding free VSTi's about though.. |

There are also some very good synths out there made with these programs as well. Don't discount the VSTi based on what it's made with (unless it's not compatible with your system). If it's free - download it and try it. At worst you wasted a little time.
www.kvraudio.com is a great place to start. _________________ Dave

Better and better freeware |
|

I agree - don't discount something just because it's free. Folks ought to check out the One Synth Challenge some time, to see just how good freeware can sound. Also, in the hands of a talented dev like Novakill's Bones, Synthedit can do the job as well as anything. His creations offer deep programming options and sound great. |

Urs Heckman developed two fantastic freeware synths.
TyrellN6 - http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6
Zebralette - http://www.u-he.com/cms/zebralette - which is a scalled down version of Zebra2. I just released a free soundset for zebralette as well http://patchlab.modulatethis.com/outpost-airlock.html. There is also a huge patch archive here http://u-he.com/PatchLib/.
Greenoaks Crystal is also free and there are versions for computer + iPhone w/ patch sharing http://www.modulatethis.com/2010/12/experimenting-with-patch-sharing-with-crystal-vst-desktop-and-iphoneipad.html. I did a littel soundcloud clip comparing patches on windows vs iphone http://soundcloud.com/markmosher/green-oak-crystal-desktop-vs-iphone-4 . _________________ Mark Mosher

Big Tick Software released some of their older instruments as freeware last year, well worth searching out. Also a Japanese one called Synth One is WELL worth trying. Very powerful analogue style synth. |

+1 on marks recommendations for the free u-he plug-ins and synth1.
i also like this ensoniq sq80 emulation: http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/and the sc prophet vs-like vsti augur: http://www.best-free-vst.com/download.php?p=Augur
if you learn to use these one - instead of downloading masses of vstis - you have most bases covered.
i also recommend the imo very music sounding kjaerhus classic vst effects bundle and the free ariesverb 0.4 alpha (delay, reverb, comb filter...). http://www.ariescode.com/forums.html _________________ Make a joyful noise!

Synth 1 |
|

Synth 1 is an outstanding free VST.
I have many VST purchases in my collection. Omnisphere for instance, one of the best you can buy, but I always go to Synth 1 when I can't seem to put my finger on the sound I am looking for. 9 times out of 10 Synth 1 comes through.
Great and best of all free. Lots of addon presets out there as well. |

I still reach for Triangle 1 that RGC Audio had put out for free...I dont think its available anymore unfortunately. Synth 1 is excellent! Certainly some good free VSTi out there... _________________ Dave
