The Mellotron's system of tone generation was a rotating bar that, when a key was pressed, would pull a piece of 1/4" tape past a playback head (one for each key). The tapes had three tracks for three different tones available from a selector, which simply moved all the playback heads left or right.
This patch uses after touch to fake the way the sound got louder and brighter when you pressed harder on the keys (because the head was in more intimate contact with the tape). I am using a pair of PM oscillators (that's phase modulation, not physical modelling) with feedback at the threshold of noise to simulate a bit of tape hiss.

He he. If you keep working on it, you can add the sqeaks the motors made, and the groans of the roadies that had to carry the origianl vintage instruments. Laughing

Supposedly the mellotron/novatron did not have any change in playback sound quality if the keys were drepeesed fast or hard or whatever. My own experience is that it did in fact make a difference.. but the actual changes/ results from pressing hard were pretty weird.. hmm.. hard to describe. i had some kind of theory way back.. but i have forgotten it.. Very Happy
