Attached is a patch that contains a constant-time linear portamento circuit. It has a straight slope like linear portamento, but has a constant time regardless of the interval, like logarithmic portamento. Basically, it's a linear portamento with a slope that is steeper for larger intervals.

There's some additional logic attached to a three-way switch which selects normal, auto, or off modes. A test oscillator creates a basic audio tone.

Cool, Chet.

Is this liniar portamento what one normally uses with strings. It seem more musical than a constant speed portamento. I mean, in music, you must finish your slides by the time the beat, or the portion of the beat, is finished.

I wonder why this isn't the default method for all synths.

Yeah, I put it together to use with string sounds. I remember Ken Elhardt complaining about the Nord Modular portamento (a typical logarithmic portamento), and speaking of moving to Reaktor to get around the problem. But the problem can be patched around.

Linear portamento sounds more acoustic than log portamento to me, especially when it's an upward interval.

I think it perhaps a linear constant-time portamento should be the default mode on modern synthesizers. I can understand using log portamento back when engineers used resistors and capacitors, but it's all just algorithms now.
