[Jazzperiments]

According to Wikipedia, to 'jam' is to play music 'without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements'. In practice, some kind of agreement on the key and tempo is enough to start a successful, inspiring jam session with several players. The objective of the applet Jazzperiments JAM is to enable a musician to jam interactively with a computer. A first version of the application was developed in 2007. Since 2009 the application can be used as a web based Java application which not only generates midi sounds, but also allows players to use samples which are recorded during the jam as musical 'notes'.

While jamming the application analyses the sound produced by one or more players and transforms the acoustic input (with Fourier) to musical data. This makes it possible to converge the input to notes of a specific scale and to create 'real time chords'. Experimenting with the application most musicians notice that it is easy to 'play' with it, although the music produced is very divers. Using Jazzperiments JAM clearly raises new technical and musical questions like: What is the optimal mic setup for interactive playing? Which scale sounds the best? How can feedback be avoided or used deliberately? The answers, solutions and jams played are very personal.
