And memory would be nice, as long as you're at it. |

Well, I'm sure the Buchla 200e version would come with memory, because Buchla owners would expect it. |

I find it very disappointing that this forum lets people delete their posts. We were having a public discussion that suddenly went all funny when Nosferatu went in and deleted all of his/her posts.
It seems very childish, in an "I'm going to take my ball and go home" sort of way. There may be some reason for this that I'm unaware of, but any revisionism in a public forum is unfortunate, and makes me think twice about participating in discussions that can suddenly turn into soliloquies.

I don't know why he would do that. It does seem odd.
He did (or maybe didn't) get the free market survey he was trying for (if it is who I think), but there is probably a non-obvious reason for deleting his emails. It seems a bit unnecessary more than anything.
But getting back to VCO talk, Magic Smoke ( www.magsmoke.com ) is coming out w/ PCBs of all of Thomas Henry's stuff from his _Analog Synth for the 21st Century_ book. The XR2206 VCO has VC skew, which sounds appealing. There are some samples and the schematic on Scott Stite's page,
http://mypeoplepc.com/members/scottnoanh/birthofasynth/id20.html
I bet you could find some "perfectly flawed" waveforms in there, like we were talking about -- a waveform that for some reason triggers something emotional. |

When I installed the forum I configured it that people could edit their own posts so they could correct errors, fix links that changed, update attachments and the lot. For the most part, no body has abused this, but maybe now we should reconsider this policy.
Thanks for your input. _________________ --Howard

It would be nice if there was something like a morph between this forum and a wiki. The cool thing about a wiki is that is has version control built in.
I imagine that Nosferatu had his reasons for nuking a bunch of his posts, but I think that what he did was akin to vandalism.
I have no idea if the forum software used here allows it, but I would love to see editing posts only available for a short period. A user could only edit a post for 24 hours (or some short-ish time). |

The forum software is not that flexible. It's basically a rights based thing, rights for groups or persons can be set on or off. Like posting is on for "members" but not for "guests", while reading is on for both. Editing can be turned off for "members" as a group and/or for individual members.
A time lock would make more sense, yes. |

Don't anyone rush to extremes because one person ruined a thread.
We must continue to be able to edit our posts.

He deleted his posts in a few threads, but I quibble.

Why? Many other discussion boards survive quite well without editing.
I can see how editing can be convenient for the top post of sticky threads that can get quite long, but in general, I like a "conversation" like this to be frozen as it is "spoken"

aperiodicy is awesome. i've found chaotic modulators to be a good way of introducing it. one thing is was going to post on the jerkster thread but didn't was the similarity to a real musician's vibrato. if anyone knows scott walker, the string drone that introduces 'it's raining today' is kind of the territory i'm getting at. also the atonal bits in his latter-day work and people like sun ra and swans.
my oscs are two analogue systems rs-95s and they've never held me back in any way. FM is limited but if i wanted to go down that road i would get something with through-zero. but then i've never listened to a moog osc drone for an hour, it might actually be really good.
ultimately though these things are designed to be modulated. sterile/alive and warm/cold should all be within the scope of whoever is programming the synth. |

This a pretty fundamental question I think, it is touching on what our digital rights are.
Just some loose thoughts I had, by no means an answer to the "why" question, that question just triggered the thoughts
Howard mentioned some reasons for wanting to have edit power, good ones I think.
Sites like Google have mechanisms for altering old truth into new truth, and I think for a good reason. A problem of the internet is that things typed down once tend to stay forever. This can be troublesome ... not only regarding the vid your neighbor happened to shoot of you kissing yet another neighbor in a dark ally but it could be just as simple as google persisting in listing a wrong IP address for your site.
Electromusic.com is trying to be a site where individuals are regarded highly. This means that individuals have some power and some responsibility as well. There are good reasons I think for wanting to edit a post and there are bad reasons as well.
Judgment about good and bad edits is left to the individual here, meaning that people are able to do edits for bad reasons as well, a price I'm willing to pay for the ability to do edits for good reasons.
For deleted posts I simply assume that the poster had good reasons to believe that those posts did not contribute to the discussion.
We've also had cases where people went back in to alter their posts for their own eternal fame. For such cases it would be good to redraw the right on editing, a thing we do have in effect for some people. This will not help of course against people deciding to do a less subtle form of editing .. like deleting all post ... Last edited by blue hell on Sat Dec 15, 2007 9:35 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Again, who knows why Nosferatu did what he did. In the grand scheme of things, he deleted his posts on a sometimes cantankerous and only fairly serious discussion of the most-marketable VCO. It's not a big enough deal to react to. I mean, he named himself after a vampire. Are we really surprised?

While I basically agree with a lot of the points regarding why editing is allowed, I think that in the case of a discussion board like this, the discussion is "owned" by the group. I think that if one person unilaterally defaces a thread, it is an affront to the group. If you change your mind, great, let us know what you're thinking now, don't go back and erase what you thought before.
FWIW, I also have trouble with artists revising their back catalog. People like Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas come to mind. Once something is released to the public, it becomes, to some extent, a shared thing. Go make some new art, don't swap guns for walkie-talkies, or make someone else shoot their gun first. |

Well I'm taking the initiative to kick-start this thread again
I'll start from Peake's post, the second one. Peake seems like an intelligent and friendly chap who has also contributed very well to the forum.
My 'dream VCO' is a the Zero Oscillator. OTOH, however, my 'dream oscillators' are my two wonderful daughters (even though they can be a tad infuriating at times )
An oscillator that could start from a sine and move through all waveforms to noise would be cool- especially if one could the pitch the noise
FWIW, the Nord Micomodular could be utilised to make one hell of a cool oscillator. It could be easy to rack up the Nord Micromodular too _________________ ACHTUNG!

I just added the new Moog MF-107 FreqBox to my setup. If used as a VCO, it tracks 1/v oct, has variable CV controlled waveshape from Triangle to Pulse, ENV control, FM and Sync. The Processing side of it adds distortion, Env tracks any audio input and seriously makes a grungy sound. Nice full sound as well and a great contender for any setup. _________________ http://www.REwireMusic.com

One of the nice things about a modular is that you don't have to choose just one VCO. I just ordered two MOTM 300s, but I plan on adding other types later on. I'm reading with interest for modern (i.e. affordable) oscillators with the drifty life that Peake talks so much about. Even though I've surely disappointed him with my choice of format. |
