NL3 defaults to program 1 on startup |
 |
|
I have an NL3 that defaults to program 1 on startup
irrespective of the last program I had selected before shut down.
I would have expected it to go back to the program
I had selected before turning it off.
Is it normal for it to default to 1? |

It is very handy, special to the performing artist, when the synth boots up in the first settings you want to use, isn't it? The NL3, being a performance synth in the first place, has the ability to start in any setting the player wants, if this setting was being saved in the synth by using the menu 'System Settings'. When saved the NL3 will boot in that particular setting until it is saved otherwise.

Hey Wout,
I had read that page, but I don't see where one can
specify what programs to start with.
I saved the settings but it still starts on 1.
Can you tell me how I specify to start on
whatever programs I had last selected - like the NL2?
Thanks |

Nope,
It's off.
Can anyone with an NL3 confirm whether
yours starts up with the program and slot
you had selected when you shut down
or goes back to the 1st program.
Thanks. |

| Mine starts at program 1.1 every time - I can't find any way to change this (had a good scour through the manual). Bit annoying/unexpected but at least the navigator is fast. |

Same here. My Nl3 will start with the first four programs in the four slots respectively. I could not find a way to make it boot up any other way. It's unfortunate because it makes me have to rearrange all my favorite patches to the first bank or thereabouts and sort of keeps me from rummaging through the other banks.

Indeed! I was mistaken with the NordModular Classic, which has the ability to save the Synth Settings and also the Patch load when booting. So no [Shift+Store] here...
I think Clavia abandoned this feature when designing the Sound Manager, in which uploading Patches is rather easy: just 'drag & drop' the Patches into a Bank and upload into the synth. For this reason I always used an almost empty first Bank... Just threw the Patches in I need in a song and save the Bank for later use on the computer.
The Sound Manager only works in Windows...
So the NL[2(X)] reminds its last Patch, the NM Classic boots in a freely to configure setting and the NL3 always boots in the first four memory locations. The question arises why didn't Clavia uses an uniform concept to all their synths? I think it's because different development teams were working on the instruments. When the NL3 was released the designers of the NL2 had already left the company.
At one hand it's confusing to users of more then one synth, at the other hand being to much bound to an earlier concept could obstruct progression: "No, you can't do that, because we always did it that way..."

Progress is based on tradition - like the red color.
But this matter is common sense in the extreme.
There is absolutely no excuse for the way the NL3 starts up.
Clearly the programmers involved didn't
use it and/or didn't turn it off very often.
I'd say it's a silly bug.
They should have made it default to the last selected programs,
and give the option to default to some specific other programs,
like the nm.
At least changing one slot doesnt change the other slots like the NW. |

Still what's the use to open in the last used Patch?
This is the way I worked a lot with it: Bank 1 is completely empty and assuming I want to create all sounds from scrap. When I have a sound I want to use, I save this on location 1:1, the second one on 1:2, etc. This is the way one always organizes the Patch savings, isn't it? When I;m done with the song I download the first Bank to the computer, name it after the project and power down the synth.
When I start again, it opens up in the Bank 1:1 settings and could do the project again, or I can upload another existing project from the computer, or I upload the Bank 1 'empty' and start from scrap again.
I found the NordLead2 booting more confusing then the NordLead3 way, because don't know 'where' in the memory the other sounds are... Or is the use only limited to four sounds?

I'm not saying a different project etc. For a project,
or any situation where I employ a computer, I can
just store the necessary program changes in the computer.
I'm referring to everyday use, sound design,
going back to where I left off.
For me the NL3 implementation doesn't make any sense. |

I know exactly what you mean. I have a G2 and I love that it remembers the last patch or performance played. I usually work in performance mode, building a full jam little by little, which may take several days. When I'm done for the day, I can just save the performance and turn it off. The next day I just turn it on and start from where I left. No need to browse through various performances or patches, like I used to do with my micromodular.
I just bought an NL3 and it doesn't have this "feature".... it always starts with the first patch, so if you're working in patch 3:99, you have to take your time to browse to it. I guess that if you use a sequencer, you can simply send a bank/program change, but sometimes I just like to spend the afternoon making new sounds in a batch. It's not a big deal, either. Some of my synths remember the last patch used (Waldorf XT, ESQ-1) and others don't (Korg synths). It's just that the NL3 can save a ton of patches and there isn't a quick way to access an arbitrary one. For example, the Korg MS2000 has 128 patches organized in 8 banks of 16 patches, so you don't need more than 5 button presses to access any patch. The NL3 has the data dial, but I don't like to use it too much because it's a bit worn out and jumpy. _________________ My music: http://cdbaby.com/all/fac |

The G2 engine doesn't by the way, it always starts in performance mode using the first performance from bank one. It's not that I have a problem with that, but mention it just for completeness sake. The NM Classic keyboard (and probably the rack, but apparently not the micro) does remember the last patch when you save with shift+store. |

I think you may both be right.
My G2 behaves differently depending on whether memory protection is on. Basically, it starts up in whatever the last patch was while memory protection was off.
So if you're in a patch -- any patch -- and turn memory protection off and then on again, the next time you power up the G2, it will start in that patch. Similarly, if memory protection is off and you switch patches and then turn off the G2, it will start back up in the same patch.
So it might be worth a bit of experimentation with memory protection before concluding that the keyboard and engine versions behave differently. |

we are both right. The engine acts different from the keyboard, and this is not related to memory protection being on or off but the engine simply lacks the user interface for storing settings and it can't be done from the editor either. This is spelled out in the manual BTW. |

NL3 Stars up at its default Subject description: Problems when storing system settings |
 |
|
Hi
I'm new in this forum so hello to all
I read all your posts on this subjects but could not find a technical solution. ? Is there any, I would be thankful if somebody can send me a workaround, since I'm tired to load my systems settings daily. To load it from the Sound manager is also not possible since I use MAC, and since a few years, the synth manufacturer don't support MAC (See also Yamaha with Motif Classic). On Page 123 of the user manual you can find in bold letters to store your systems settings to get them on power on.
In adittion on changes to the program slots I also changes the pitch bend ranged and the speed and modulation depth. The I stored this in accordance to the manual, see page 128. The display messages is "done". (Memory protect is off !
The funny thing is: It was working a few months ago, but after that I used the Sound manager to reload some factory presets and since that, I thought I damaged something in the NL3
I even thought, the buffer battery of this RAM is weak, so I opened the synth to check it. No battery !
So If anyone has an Idea I would be thankful

If the machine doesn't use a battery to feed an internal RAM with the user data, then it must use FLASH RAM. This is not known to last forever, so maybe the FLASH RAM of your synth is not working properly by now? _________________ Cheers,

NL3 defaults to program start up |
 |
|
Hi
Thanks for your message:
To exchange the Flash ROM is a cruicial thing in the NL3 and will probably lead to a sudden death of this outstanding instrument.
I still think it is a software bug and not a hardware problem, because, the sound banks as well as user banks use the same type of memory. And this part is working quite well. I still suppose, there is somethings wrong with the sound manager, since the problem occured, when I used it first time.
sincerely
