Chasing a feeling...

I'm sitting on a bench next to a closed window, high up in an building where lots of families live, but I never see them. I don't smoke, but in this situation I seem to be holding a cigarette, whose embers, along with leds on appliances and clocks, are the only points of light in the room. I look out across empty air at another building, lit windows scattered across its surface. I can see no movement inside. Where is everyone?
