Calendar Event: October 21, 2026

TE-MPO (The Electro-Music Performers Organization) invites you to a Workshop / Music Lab presentation:

Live Music Visual Design Workshop with Synesthesia Music Visualizer

Date/Time: Wednesday Oct 21, 2026 08:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Where: Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83249561640?pwd=1tMDHHYSRwvexN1eB1qHaRLMpeDHUH.1

Meeting ID: 832 4956 1640

Passcode:340611

Presenter: Gianni Intili

This beginner-friendly session shows how to create live visuals that move with music using Synesthesia (https://synesthesia.live/). No experience with visuals is needed. We will look at the basics of the visualizer tool, getting audio in, exploring scenes, using the control panel, and playing visuals live.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE WORKSHOP

First of all, we don't have many visual artists available for many of our events, especially for NEEMFest, a three-day electro-music festival that takes place yearly in Homer, New York, where many of our collective participate. Oftentimes at NEEMFest, we ask volunteers to take on visuals on the spot, sometimes without the basic know-how of how a visual program or app is modulated. Some of these on-the-spot visual artists change scenes often and, to be blunt, not as smoothly as expected.

In this workshop, we focus on one scene at a time and shape it slowly, the way one would sweep a filter on a synthesizer. By moving controls such as color, gamma, and saturation gradually, a simple scene can evolve into very creative visuals completely different from its starting point.

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

Please look at the attached handout packet, which includes a quick start guide, a glossary, and a control panel cheat sheet. To get a feel for the approach, watch a few minutes of these videos:

1. Short sample (about 2+ minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-maxyppUyM

2. Longer sample (about 4+ minutes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ-EaDM7qG4

3. Extended session (about 1.5 hours): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za3JIPB15JI&t=3154s

You don't need to watch the long one in full. Scroll through it, stop anywhere, and watch a minute or two of any visualization to see how it moves with the music and how a basic scene changes over time.

The three video samples were created during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, 5 years ago, as we explored livestreamed music performances from our home music studios. They were created to be streamed with OBS Studio, using a number of visual windows showing the same visual scene, arranged artistically to create engaging arrays. The third video, for a track titled "A Dilemma of MASS+ENERGY," has a lot to offer graphically at about 52:00, and is worth a minute or two of viewing.

OPTIONAL

If you would like to follow along, you can install Synesthesia ahead of time from https://synesthesia.live/. The app is free to try as a demo with a watermark, and a full license is sold for $99. Headphones are helpful for the Zoom session.

We look forward to seeing you there.

GI

Looks great, will it be recorded for people in different time zones?

Yes Jez, we will record it and make the video available on: https://www.youtube.com/@te-mp0musiclab993

If you have interest in Synesthesia, get the demo copy and watch a 4 minutes video on the basics.

Last time I checked, like last Friday October 2, the license for the app was $99, come Monday the 5th, and is gone up to $199...amazing coincidence or AI manufacturing? I only sent the invitation to 200 people.
