New G2 Patch Archive Version 1.0 Available |
|
|
The new G2 Patch Archive, version 1.0 is now available at this link
http://electro-music.com/g2patches.php
Thanks to all those who gave valuable feedback while I was working on the prototype.
With this version you can sort the patches by any column; just click on the column headers. Click again to sort in the other direction.
Features in the cue but not available are:
View only patches by one poster, in one forum, in one topic.
View only posts submitted after a certain date.
Bulk download of many patches via a zip file.
For people who are interested in archives for other synthesizers and programs, don't worry, we are not just working on the G2. This program will is being made as generalized as possible so it will work on all attachments.
If you have suggestions for improving this, please post them as replies to this message. Last edited by mosc on Sat Apr 10, 2004 4:01 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Hi all,
For locally mirroring the G2 Patches site with OS X,
try http://www.sitesucker.us/ -- I just used it, and
grabbed the whole archive in about 5 minutes.
Very clean app, but careful with the preferences--
set the limits to level five and URL host, as well as
lookl at all the other options. very powerful and fast.

Just a small point Mosc could we not extract the category of the patch and sort by that as well? _________________ Taz says:- 'My Sub My Rules' |

Wouldn't clicking on the forum heading do that? _________________ --Howard

Well I meant the categroy extracted from the patch itself.
Given the clavia have implemented a structure it would seem useful to bring it forward as an index.
I agree the forum is a subset of this but it but by automating the generation of the category field then perhaps people might increasingly use the provided indexing on the machine as well. _________________ Taz says:- 'My Sub My Rules' |

It's just a bit hard to extract the category from the patch .... the format is binary and it has not been made decodable.

Yes, the only structure we can apply is by categories the poster chooses. _________________ --Howard

Well, if anyone has suggestions for more categories, or for cleaning up the ones we have, it would be great to hear them. _________________ --Howard

Howard, this is a wonderful job -- thank you.
Now I feel obligated to contribute some patches.

See what you've done mosc?
I went out and bought a G2, just so I could use this archive |

Ha ha ha... If you send me half as much money as you spent on the G2 I'll build you a personal archive.
Anyhow, the G2 is better than this archive, IMHO. _________________ --Howard

How about if I send you a gift cetificate for a Yocco's Doggy pack ?

I think I'll be spending a lot of time in this archive, once the G2 arrives.
Is there anyway I can grab the whole archive via ftp ? |

Cheers Mosc, this is great
edit: Maybe a feature could be added that simply displays an index of all the patch links on one page with nothing else. Then it's just a simple matter of pointing your download program to the page and it'll grab all the links in one hit. If there is nothing else on the page, then you'll get all the patches and nothing else |

I'm reluctant to make it easy for people to get the entire patch archive in one fell swoop because over time that will eat-up our limited network bandwidth. Instead, I'd like to develop something where members can do a bulk download and the database keeps a timestamp so the next time they only get newer files. All of this must wait until I get some time to get my hacker hat back on. Now I have my international conference organizer hat on. _________________ --Howard

How about creating a Torrent for the latest complete Archive? That would be a good way to share the load. _________________ Steve |

We will very soon have a new way to download a snapshot of the patch archive in a zip file. That will make it more convenient for many users. We are testing this out now.
Please don't redistribute any content from electro-music.com on any p2p networks. Please see our counditions of use. _________________ --Howard

If you used a tracker for the torrent you could ensure that only electro-music subscribers could download it.
The snaphot sounds like a good idea, distributing this zip via a subscriber only torrent could reduce your bandwidth considerably.

Steve, can you point me to some documentation on this. I'm not familiar with it. I think we'll have the static archive ready in a day or two possibly. We can handle the bandwidth for now, but this is something that sounds interesting. _________________ --Howard
