Oh, crap, I did delete the link to him when I pulled out the Ginsu knives - the one on the bottom of the page under resources. I was in such haste, I forgot about and didn't notice that one on the middle of the page.

Thanks for pointing it out. I had to sack the ninja and hire rambo.

OK, taken care of......

You're absolutely right there Stein, and I've misinterpreted stuff too- also the way I can seem to come across (or as I've been told- by for eg Paul e) can be read much differently than what I'm actually trying to convey. Perhaps the next generation of forums will be Skype-based?? I kind of doubt that though.

FWIW, I am studying exactly the subject that Randal says he has 30+ years experience of, and believe me, I'm surrounded with people with pretty much the same attitude Randal has. It's NOT a musician's attitude, It's a product designers attitude- it's a very different and opportunistic attitude, and above all it's an attitude involving making money, big money. (The CAPD&E graduates are some of the highest paid of all the university students, once they get the work. I said I wanted a Buchla didn't I?!! Wink Very Happy ).

If there is anything that is really wrong with Randal, and that is that he has definite delusions of grandeur within a circle of people he knows little about. I don't think he thinks he's doing anything wrong- far from it, but I do think he thinks he's helping others out by being a 'representative' for them. But again, I feel he's gone around it in the wrong way, using these old and tired sales techniques (one's that Ian was quick to spot), and getting people's backs up by aggressive PM tactics. I can tell he has a lot to learn, and I think one can also tell, that he has very little experience in electronic music DIY. I imagine that he's probably been to recent NAMM or whatever tradeshow looking to get work for a major synth company, only to find the oddball DIY community, and getting ideas from that- in fact that was one of his very first posts, that he wished to move into this area.

Randal really needs to gain the trust of the DIY'ers here, and so far he's more or less blown it, but then again he may win people over with a tactic that may work for him (especially if he pulls the Fatar deal off). So I suppose we'll have to see, but I don't think we will be able to shake him off as just 'some nutter', that easily.

I hope that makes sense? I've scanned it 100 times Wink Exclamation

Well, you don´t say to a kid that "you probably shouldn´t continue your extensive research to see if the porcelain eventually will bounce unscathed off the concete.. even though you think your testing so far hasn´t been 100% conclusive". That is the wrong approach. It won´t work with kids and it certainly won´t work with Randal. We´ll see what happens next.

I know. It´s way too easy to get it wrong. That is why it is amazing how this community has managed to create a very laid back and calm manner. We are seeing few serious disasters. Other boards have flames and semtex flying all over the place all the time. We hardly get any of that, and when we do it is usually easily resolved.

Has anyone else noticed he seems to be utterly devoid of anecdotal remark concerning synth DIY? Everything he's so far presented concerning synth diy could be found by anybody doing their google homework.

The few times he's offered anything seem strangely vague or odd. Like when he was referring to the quadrature function generator's "waves of triangle" or some such rot. It's a cool circuit, but it's not quite the second coming he was gasping about. Plus, you need something to drive with the VCQFG.

And his comment about how "these klees are fun". (A) You have to either have some form of Klee prototyped or built and (B) Again, you have to have something to drive with it and something to drive it.

I don't recall him ever talking about any equipment he's specifically using or has used. Anybody who's ever been actively involved with synth DIY usually speaks about what they're running eventually. Or am I missing something?

Scott, you are completely correct. This is a good observation. I noticed the same early on.
A true synth nut will start to make virtual patches while looking at the schematics and imagine how to honk something way over there and get the fridge flonking while the filters will scream with delight. You know how it goes. That is part of the motivation.
Randal also clearly missed the typical overview any synthesist will sport when discussing modules and ideas.

I think one of you guys should warn Jørgen Bergfors. Shit.. he is a swede. I could probably find his phone number and call him. However, if any of you guys have actually been in contact with him before then.. Question

Hi Stein!

I just saw your earlier post in the TH keyboard controller thread. Mentioning a FATAR group buy.

And I had just posted this before I saw it:

http://electro-music.com/forum/post-131051.html#131051

Great minds must think alike! (Or is that twisted minds )

Randal

Hey, quick question:
Do you know a way to get in touch with Jorgen Bergfors?

I'm trying to secure his permission to offer a couple of his designs; and I'd like to have his input on my "Captain Nemo"... (Hold everything! I think a decent synth name for the thing just suggested itself!?!?)

Was gonna be just a GeoM "signature line" synth with turn-of-the-century stylings. But now! How about?<SDS3>

the GeoM NEMO Synth!

(Whaddya think? Disney probably would try to say I was after their fish! ) I'll tell them it stands for "New Electronic Modular Omnipotence!"

Back to the purpose of this letter?
Anyways; since you're in that part of the world; perhaps you'll have more luck than me in coming up with contact info for Jorgen? searching using other than English? Any help will be truly appreciated!

I have a few top-notch synth designers lined up already and sure would like to have Jorgen represented in my NAMM 08 offerings!

I think this is a brag. A 'fast one' as we say Wink I don't reckon R has any 'top-notch' synth designers lined up. This is to say 'I'm okay really'- if you see what I'm getting at.

Scott's right about the comparator circuit too- even I know how simple one is. Garbage in, squarewave out! Laughing

I also think Jorgen has more sense that Randal thinks.

I am expecting Randal to jump on Mike Ford. Mike´s cool devices do have that Jules Verne flair to them, don´t they?

Prolly so - could be where he drew his "inspiration".

On the subject of Norweigan and Swedish - I used to go to Finland quite regularly, and the little books in the hotel rooms describing the facilities would invariably be in several different languages. Swedish, Norweigan - I could more or less get the gist of what was being discussed without cheating and looking at the English translation.

But Finnish? Holy cow! Totally out of left field. No heads nor any tails could be made of any of that. I've always wondered how it could be situated so closely, but have such a distinctly different language as opposed to the countries around it.

Stein suggested I read this topic but I can't take it all in.

If there is something that needs my attention, please someone let me know. As for this issue of people using the designs, here's a suggestion:

The G2patch archive has a statement at the bottom that says: Patches and performances posted on electro-music.com may not be redistributed without the express consent of the author/creator.

I don't see why a DIY moderator, or even me, shouldn't post a sticky on the DIY forum that says something like:

Quote:
Engineering information such as circuits, schematics, descriptions, layouts, netlists, operational explainations, diagrams and photos are posted by members for educational purposes to benifit the electro-music.community and may not be redistributed or used in any commercial or non-commercial product without the express consent of the author/creator.

I could also add such wording to the to the conditons of use statement.

Any feedback?

OK. Now we have news from the corporate world! I got this PM yesterday:

Hi Stein,

Please send me your shipping address at my regular email: randaleem@yahoo.com

I will reply with payment information when it is time.

A single Thomas Henry Quadrature Function generator board is 18USD+7USd S/H to Europe. You can get a partial parts kit with the board which adds a 13700 chip, machined pin socket strips for all IC's, all diodes and decoupling caps for 20USD+S/H.

Two boards are 38USD+7USD S/H and include the 13700's, IC socket strips (Machined pin), diodes and decoupling capacitors.

I also will soon be offering two additional boards designed to work in concert with this one. The first is a quad VC-PWM which takes the outputs of the THD107 and gives 4 voltage variable pulse streams which can be used in a number of ways for CV and/or audio. The VC-PWMx4 can be used by itself as well as with the Thomas Henry QFG.

The second board is a quad VCA based on the SSM2164 chip. It offers both linear and exponential response from each of the 4 VCA's; and can function as a VC- CV/audio mixer/panner. It is a very powerful module by itself and is an ideal companion to the THD107 QFG.

The three boards together help you fully realise the potential of the THD107 QFG module.

Please let me know if either or both of these additional boards is interesting to you? Their price should be the same or less than the QFG, and I will be selling 2164 chips to go with the quad VCA.

Thank you again,

Randal

Note: All S/H prices shown above are for European shipping destinations; USA and Canada are 4USD flat rate.
