He sent me a PM today, he was curious what it was I was looking for on the picture of his built QFG. Rather than tell him I just wanted to see if he'd actually built one (he did, and it's not that pretty), I told him that I just wanted to see how to mount it in a case. That got a tome of helpful hints. I won't pollute the airwaves here. He says he's really busy, but if he wasn't exercising his mad typing skillz he'd have a chance of having something for NAMM. He seems to want us to respect him now he's got a board out.

I told him people who post audio samples get credit.

yeah, here's what I wrote him (he was making some excuse about having a full plate so he wouldn't be able to use Audacity for a while:

Edison, talking to Randaleem wrote:

Full plate or not, Audacity is free, it works, and you should get it onto a computer near you. The more people hear samples of things, the more they understand what these things do. Everybody wins, because the noobs associate a sound effect with a circuit or process, the oldtimers get to compare it to other circuits, and the creator gets credit for doing something.

concerning this randal typing avalanche: i am so sorry about his short comment on my question about his unique uniqueness. i really hoped he would publish a new novel, giving me the chance to tell him in public that i don't have the time and/or the will to read all this, mentioning the possibility of unredundant information transfer... i mean, noone has told him yet how exhausting this can be.

he's actually been getting the hint, some nuances of some of our replies seem to have hit home.

I'm not quite sure what to make of why the trimpots are the way they are. He had to roll a cap on its side to get to two of them, and what looks like to be the V/Oct is laid down so you have to take the panel off just to get to it (unless, I guess you put a tiny little hole in your panel to get to it, which may be what he has in mind).

All of those trimpots could be top adjust, and would make the real world....real.

At my company, all of our early products used OCXOs for the frequency standard. We supplied a little hole on the front of the panel so the customer could access the trimpot that adjusted the frequency of the freq standard. Almost without fail, when I had to calibrate one of these service monitors, I'd find that trimpot so far out of skew, it's a wonder the FCC didn't come knocking on the customer's door. Maybe they did, and that was the reason I was calibrating it. Thing is, the OCXO would not settle down until a good thirty minutes of operation, so Joe Tech thought his set needed adjusted thirty seconds after power-up. Later Rubidium standards would be OK after four minutes, but that was long after this juncture in our history.

Anyway, we don' do that anymore. Freq standard calibration is DAC controlled, the access of which is controlled by a password. The point being, calibration points should remain behind the panel - it's too tempting for the uninformed or ill-prepared to jack around with it otherwise.

Yes it's a constant balance, on one side you want the user to have flexibility but a lot of that flexibility will come back as bug reports.

But I REALLY like the chatterbox simplicity ideal too, so I'm thinking that perhaps if there is enough interest, a fast-tracked inexpensive pro-PCB might be a nice holiday gift. What do you guys think? If the boards were here next week, would that be enough time to get them built as gifts?

Is there any interest in a 10-12 dollar PCB for the chatterbox? (I'd lose all the digital noise and replace it with a standard synth noise circuit to significantly reduce the IC count. And trade the individual 741's for a couple quad packages. Is the LM380 really necessary on the PCB?

No parts kits, minimal build docs,IOW, fast tracked. 10-12USD. Any interest?

yeah! Bring it on! fast tracked?! yeah! Next week? Cool! Cool Modify the circuit? By next week? Fast tracked? Yeah! Cool! Yeah! Cool Shocked

I ran across an interesting quote in our local newspaper today. It's from John Ray, who was an English naturalist in the 1600's.

"He that useth many words for the explaining of any subject, doth, like the cuttle fish, hide himself for the most part in his own ink."

My mind went to you-know-who at once.

Thomas, I really like how you think. That is so on the mark.

Did anybody see him with his chatterbox authorization? (sigh)

Usually, if I have a hankerin' for a good formant, I'll pulse modulate the center frequency of a resonant filter, or I'll use my triple res.

Anyway, for all of you fans of Randalology, here's a post that demonstrates a curious lack of Googigular aptitude, his second to the Wiard list:

Quote:
Hi,

I'm getting ready to build a custom cabinet for a gentleman whose
modules have not yet arrived, so I've been searching for dimensional
info and pictures of the Wiard 300 series. Without much luck.

I know the panel height, width and thickness of course, and I recall
seeing some pictures somewhere showing a DIN? power connector at the
rear? I will probably need to mold some right angle DIN Power
connectors so they don't stick out as far to fit the arrangement I have
in mind for the chest/cabinet. (If my memory of that picture serves me
correctly.)

So I'm looking for detailed dimensions for both the 300 series and the
new JAG. With pictures if possible. Not of the module faces, just the
parts that will need to fit in an enclosed space.

Can anyone help me?

I especially need to know how much room below the JAG panel is
required? And how tall the joysticks are when fully uhh, (straight up).

The cabinet is going to be an elegant wooden "Chinese puzzle" affair
(not just a plain box) with exposed joinery and with some moving parts
that shift between traveling and playing mode. I hope it will be as
special as the modules it will contain, integrating into a complete
instrument as is Grant's expressed Wiard goal.

So if anyone has or can create at least a direct side view of the
modules with dimensions, and a picture of the rear I'd be very thankful
and appreciative!

Oh, and I also need to know about the power supply, its dimensions? If
that is something which Grant provides with a system. I forgot to ask
my customer if a power supply was included in his Wiard purchase.

Also, I have a second completely separate request: Does anyone here
know the manufacturer or source for the Wiard joysticks? I'm putting
together a vowel/voice PCB and have been trying to find a good source
of joysticks to go with the PCB's.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Kind regards, Randal

That's bringing things to an even boil, what with the Chattybox, pending board deliveries, and NAMM. Now he's putting a Wiard 300 system into a Chinese puzzle with moving parts. I don't know why Google wouldn't tell him those modules use bipolar line lumps.

Anything ever show up on Geomesa or whatever it was?

Oh, come on, Randal would have never missed this:

http://emusician.com/elecinstruments/emusic_wiard_series_modular/

You know he read it, just look at how the second paragraph ends.

The weirder things get, the more they stay the same.

Or maybe I just read it and I want people to think I've been familiar with Wiard for the past five years?

yeah, that's his usual trick. Out of the blue, he's working on some massive and unique project for a friend (never any name dropping when it's on his side, but drops names like pennies when it's sales side) - and we'll never see pictures of this alleged Wiard project. For chrissakes, can't he see the modules he's going to build into a case? Confused Oh, yeah. That's because they're currently residing in an alternate reality.

Did anyone actually receive any QFG boards? Shouldn´t these be in the hands of his customers by now?

I paid him over a week ago. He claimed at the time that my boards were already packed and waiting for my money. Then, mystically, after my little exchange in his thread, he claimed that "all remaining boards would be shipped this weekend" (which was last weekend now). I note that nobody has publicly acknowledged any receipt of the boards.

Now, it isn't like they go by steamship across the pond. Ian's T/G/T/S/H board took 4 days to make its way from Albequerque to my door. So if it had shipped reasonably promptly (whatever that means in Randal's reality), I'd at least be hearing from Customs (because I am dead certain he's managed to fuck that up and it's overvalued and needs duty paid anyway). But I have not. I'm willing to give it another couple of days before I mention that fact in his thread.

You can bet your posterior that I shall never have anything to do with GeomUSA, Randall Lee or Citrus Springs CA ever again. $45 for a couple of boards and chips would have been better spent on Klee front panel parts, which I have to spend more than that anyway. How hard is it to stick a PCB in an envelope? They don't break that easily.

BTW.. I got a package from you just now. Very Happy Now I really gotta remember to bring those chips to the post office. Laughing
It´s like.. oh damned.. should I go back and fethch the envelope.. nah.. not now.. I will have to buy some more beer later this evening.. I can do it then.. Rolling Eyes In Norway the good old post office is gone. Instead there is a post office thingie inside your local beer outlet that handle shit like that.

Do you remember that thread which Stein discovered GeomUSA as a company selling vapourware. I think it was a drill which was going at some amazingly cheap price, which everybody ordered and weeks later nothing arrived. BUT Randal also paid that guy back in full- so there wasn't a problem.

It's almost as if this is a game about attention seeking but nothing else. Randal's trick is to let the attention go on as far as is possible, but then he keeps the power by paying back (although we've yet to see that here), thus keeping the power, so he can repeat it over and over again.

I think we actually did him a favour, because kicking him up the arse, for once actually made Randal deliver- and that's why he's so happy at the moment.

I think maybe, if we had given in to him and for eg Scott had said yes to letting him do the mini-klee, and we hadn't of kicked him up the arse, we would all still be waiting, he would pay everybody back, so everybody would forgive him, then the whole cycle would repeat again.

I really feel like saying- that we should nuture him, but then again why the heck should we? Randal is a grown up just like the rest of us! Twisted Evil

Energy vampire! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

That makes sense, as this is about attention seeking rather than actually delivering. I don't think Randal gets a hit from delivering an actual product that much, he just lives for the build-up.
